1965 The end of Lysenkoism

50 years ago, on September 2, 1965, at a joint meeting of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the collegium of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Presidium of the All-Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, chaired by the President of the USSR Academy of Sciences Mstislav Keldysh, the question of the advisability of continuing the work of a group of researchers headed by Academician Trofim Lysenko was considered. His theory of "vernalization" and "Michurin's biology" were recognized as unscientific, and classical genetics was rehabilitated. As a result of the activities of Lysenko and his associates, Soviet biology was thrown back several decades, and many geneticists were persecuted.
