Where did the phrase come from that Europe did not know such an influx of refugees since the Second World War? It seems that it was the first to say to Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European Commissioner for Internal Affairs, Migration and Citizenship. However, he spoke not about Europe, but about the world as a whole: "Today the world is faced with the worst of the Second World War with a crisis of refugees."

Avramopoulos took this comparison from the report of the UN Supreme Commissioner for Refugees. It was published in mid -June and contains data for 2014. The number of refugees and displaced persons in the world is estimated at 59.5 million. This is 8.3 million more than it was a year before. Of these, 38.2 million are internally displaced faces, that is, people who did not leave the limits of their country. 19.5 million - refugees. And another 1.8 million filed a petition for refuge and are waiting for the decision of their fate.

The numbers are really huge. They mean that every day in the world 42 thousand people lose their own and are forced to run where their eyes look. For clarity, you can say differently: every 122nd resident of the Earth is a refugee or a moved person.

But to Europe, the bulk of these people torn from their native land does not reach people. They remain either in their country or in neighboring ones. The country, which adopted the largest number of refugees last year - 1.59 million people - Türkiye. It is followed by Pakistan (1.51 million), Lebanon (1.15), Iran (982 thousand). 86 percent of refugees are accepted by developing countries. Almost a fifth of all refugees - 3.6 million - find a shelter in the poorest countries of the world.

After the Second World War, there were 50 million refugees and displaced persons in the dilapidated, dilated Europe. Today, 340 thousand unfortunate people reached the prosperous, pampered Europe, and we hear exclamations and groans about the overwhelming burden, disaster, and the threat of European identity. Sunset of Europe, and nothing more.

However, they are groaning far everywhere. An example of a responsible, humane, civilized attitude to refugees is given by Germany. The population mainly supports the position of the government. The arson of buildings intended for a temporary shelter of refugees, and other excesses are the work of political marginals.

A different picture in Eastern Europe. Hungary is building a fence on the border with Serbia. Her Prime Minister Viktor Orban says that thereby he saves Europe from the invasion: "We took the obligation to protect the EU borders when signing the Schengen agreement, this is what we do." Slovakia said that she would only accept Christians or atheists. The head of her government, Robert Fitzo, scares Europe by the fact that together with refugees there is terrorism. The President of the Czech Republic Milos Zeman mockingly offers those who condemn xenophobia, "take their home on the refugee." Eastern Europe decisively rejects the idea of ​​national quotas for reception of refugees proposed by the European Commission.

No sunset of Europe, of course, will happen. The population of the EU countries currently has half a billion people, more precisely - 509 million 216 thousand. 340 thousand refugees are 0.067 percent of this number. Not a disaster, not the end of the world and not a reason for panic. In Lebanon, a thousand local residents account for 232 refugees - every fifth . They live for $ 19 a month. And something is not heard about the crisis of Lebanese identity.

Shelter’s right is the oldest tradition of Europe. French Huguenots, English Puritans fled from the persecution of their authorities to other European countries. After the revolution and the Civil War, Europe adopted several million immigrants from Russia. Europe remembers the wall that has blocked her, but this is far from the best of its past.
