The court in Gvatemala issued an arrest warrant of the current president of the country Otto Perez, suspected of corruption. It is reported by Reuters. The decision was made at the request of the Prosecutor General of the country of Telma Aldana.

It is claimed that Perez is involved in the activities of the criminal group La Línea (Spanish "" Line "). According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, he allowed the importers not to pay customs duties for bribes.

Perez, as the president, had immunity from criminal prosecution, but on September 1, the country's Congress with a unanimous decision deprived him of immunity and forbade him to leave the country. In the event of the arrest of the transfer, the court will receive the right to terminate his presidential powers ahead of schedule. Then, according to the Constitution, the current vice president Alehandro Maldonado will take the place of the head of state.

The previous vice president, Roxanne Balldetti, lost her post in May against the backdrop of the same corruption scandal. On August 21, she was arrested in the case of La Línea.

The arrest warrant was issued a few days before the next presidential election planned on Sunday. The current president himself does not participate in them, since the laws of Guatemala prohibit one person to occupy the post of head of state for more than one deadline.

All this year in Guatemala, protests are continuing with the requirement of the early resignation of the Perez. The President, however, declares his innocence and refuses to leave the post before the expiration of four years of cadence in January 2016.

According to the lawyer of the head of state, at 8 a.m. Thursday by local time (17 hours of Moscow time) Perez will personally appear in court.
