1985. The death of Vasil Stus
30 years ago, on September 4, 1985, in the Perm-36 camp near the village of Kuchino, Perm region, after the hunger strike, the 47-year-old Ukrainian poet and human rights activist Vasil Stus died in Kartsere on August 27.
In 1980, he was arrested for speaking in defense of prisoners of conscience and sentenced to 10 years in camps and 5 years in exile.
According to one version, the death of Stus was violent: he was nominated to the Nobel Prize in literature, and the authorities were afraid of a world scandal if the prisoner became a laureate.
In 1989, Stus’s ashes were buried in a Baykov cemetery in Kyiv, and in 1990 he was rehabilitated.
In 2005, "For the invincibility of the spirit, sacrificial service to Ukraine and the national idea, the high humanistic ideals of creativity" President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko posthumously appropriated the title of Hero of Ukraine.
