It is necessary to improve institutions for supporting the principles and norms of international law, in particular, the right of a veto in the UN Security Council. This was stated by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko at the opening of the 12th meeting of the Yalta European Strategy (YES), the press service of the head of state reports .
"Russian aggression against Ukraine clearly demonstrated them (existing legal mechanisms. - Ed.) Disadvantages. I hope that we will begin the corresponding discussion during the upcoming 70th session of the UN General Assembly, since Russian aggression against Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea Russia completely destroyed the post -war security system, made it ineffective," Poroshenko said.
The opposing Russian aggression of Ukraine is the cornerstone of security in Europe, the president noted. "Independent democratic Ukraine, which is deeply integrated into the system of European values, is the cornerstone of security and stability in Europe and abroad. If this support is undermined, the foundations of European and global security will be destroyed," Poroshenko said.
Poroshenko called for making it clear that if Russia further impedes the settlement process in the Donbass, enhanced restrictive measures will be introduced against it.
In addition, the president said that it was time to discuss the possibility of an operation in eastern Ukraine to ensure the implementation of the Minsk agreements. “This will help us achieve two goals for restoring peace in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions: a complete withdrawal of all occupation troops from the Ukrainian territory and the closure of the Ukrainian -Russian border. These are two main prerequisites for establishing peace and stability in the Donbass. We do not have a civil war, no internal conflict. Everything is very simple. There is aggression against Ukraine and the occupation of independent Ukraine. The aggressor, which is obvious, is Russia. - said Poroshenko.
"We must make comprehensive efforts to quickly liberate all Ukrainian citizens, including Nadezhda Savchenko and Oleg Sentsov, contained both in basements in the Donbass and in prison cells in Russia," the president emphasized.
The annual YES meeting is held in Kyiv for the second time. From 2004 to 2013, before the annexation of Crimea Russia, the traditional venue for the forum was the Livadian Palace in Yalta.
On September 4, Kommersant, citing sources in Western diplomatic circles, reported the European Union and the United States is considering the possibility of imposing new sanctions against Russia . New measures will be taken if the authorities of the self -proclaimed DPR and LPR refuse to hold local elections on October 25. The issue of the timing and conditions of the local elections in Donetsk should be one of the key and in negotiations between the leaders of the Norman Four, which may take place in the end of September in New York during the UN General Assembly.
On September 6, in an interview with Voice of America, Poroshenko called for limiting the right of Russia's veto in the UN Security Council. In his opinion, Russia should remain a permanent member of the Security Council, but "should be deprived of the right of veto in the conflicts, the participant of which it is." “Such a step will not only take the Council of Security Council more effective - it will return the efficiency to these mechanisms, since now the council is simply blocked and it is not able to fulfill its function,” the president said.
