The consul of the Russian Embassy was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to deliver a note in connection with violations by the Russian side of the rights of Ukrainian citizens Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh, held on Russian territory. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has repeatedly drawn attention to gross violations of the rights of Mykola Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh, who have been held in custody in Russia since March 2014 and, respectively, since August 2014. Stanislav Klykh, in particular, in July 2015, stated in writing that he was subjected to torture by Russian law enforcement officers in order to obtain testimony and that he renounced his previous testimony given under torture. There is reason to believe that the same illegal actions were used against Mykola Karpyuk,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a commentary .

As noted by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, during the entire period of imprisonment, Ukrainian consular officials were not allowed to see the arrested Ukrainians. The Ukrainian side regards such actions as a deliberate disregard for the international obligations assumed by Russia, in particular the provisions of the Consular Convention between the two countries, as well as an attempt to hide violations of the provisions of the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture or Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

As Kommersant reported, on September 15, preliminary hearings began in the Supreme Court of Chechnya in the criminal case of two members of the nationalist organization UNA-UNSO - citizens of Ukraine Nikolai Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh. They are accused of killing 30 Russian servicemen during the first Chechen campaign. If found guilty, they face 20 years to life in prison.
