Moscow's Ostankino Court has arrested Andrei Mayakov, the director of human resources for the human rights organization "Committee for Civil Rights," until November 16. He is accused of attempted fraud, an Interfax correspondent reports from the courtroom.

"The court ruled to satisfy the investigators' motion and ruled to choose a preventive measure in the form of detention for Mayakov until November 16," the judge announced.

The defendant's defense team said they would appeal his arrest.

Mayakov, whose detention was previously reported by Andrei Babushkin, a member of the Presidential Council for Human Rights, is suspected of attempted fraud, Vladimir Markin, an official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, reported earlier on Thursday.

"According to the investigation, on September 16, Mayakov, while in his office, received no less than 900,000 rubles from a defendant in a criminal case being investigated by the police," Markin told Interfax on Thursday.

At the same time, according to him, Mayakov promised that he would transfer funds as a bribe to an employee of the prosecutor's office of the North-Eastern Administrative District of Moscow for making a decision to terminate the criminal case.

"In reality, Mayakov had neither connections in the said division of the prosecutor's office, nor any other opportunities to influence the procedural decision on the criminal case. He intended to appropriate the illegally obtained money," Markin said.

"Immediately after receiving the specified amount, the human rights activist was detained with the money he had received at the scene of the incident by law enforcement officers," added the representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.
