Physical defects in crystalline films can be amazingly beautiful when viewed under polarized light. This is proven by the unusual science art exhibition LIGHT D'EFFECTS. It opened during the Second Novosibirsk Science Festival EUREKA!FEST, organized by NSU and the Akademgorodok Foundation. It is interesting that the authors of the exhibition live in different cities - New York, Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk - and united to make a common project.
The exhibition is based on photographs of Maria Gerasimova . Maria was born and raised in the Novosibirsk Academy Town, studied at the physics department of Novosibirsk State University, and received a PhD degree from Yale University. She is an expert in the field of crystal physics, now holds the title of Professor of Physics at the University of Bridgeport and lives permanently in the USA.
Pictures taken using a microscope using the so-called Nomarski method reveal to viewers the fantastic worlds of artificial crystals that scientists grow for semiconductors.
“The technology for growing crystals is complex; the epitaxy method is used: that is, crystals are grown in layers, one thin film after another,” says Maria. “Growing a layer without defects—smooth, like a mirror—is quite difficult. As it grows, cracks, pinpoint defects, foreign particles, or strange phenomena appear on the edges, and then amazing landscapes appear in the microscope eyepiece.”
The Nomarski method makes it possible to enlarge the image transmitted by the microscope and see it in color: a beam of light passes through a prism and special polarizing filters. Thus, the viewer is presented with a beauty that exists, but is invisible to the naked eye.
The second participant in the project is Krasnoyarsk resident Semyon Lukin , a graduate of the Institute of Space Research and High Technologies of Siberian State Agrarian University, one of the creators of the interactive science museum “Newton Park”, organizer of the famous Krasnoyarsk educational festival “Zero September”. At the exhibition, he presents an object with which you can see the properties of multilayer transparent bodies in polarized light.
The design and decoration of the exhibition is handled by the famous Novosibirsk designer and photographer Asya Rozonova . The exhibition is curated by Alexander Dubynin .
The LIGHT D'EFFECTS exhibition is dedicated to UNESCO's International Year of Light and Light Technologies.
