The board of directors of Moscow theaters on Friday appointed its artistic director Kirill Serebrennikov to the position of director of the Gogol Center, and Alexey Kabeshev as his deputy.

As a result of an audit that took place at the Gogol Center at the end of 2014, its director Alexey Malobrodsky was fired. The new director was producer and TV presenter Anastasia Golub, who soon left the position of her own free will. Due to the difficult economic situation in the theater, the conclusion of new contracts was suspended and contracts for new productions that were in the plan were stopped.

As Kirill Serebrennikov clarified, Alexey Kabeshev’s candidacy was submitted to the council for consideration a month ago.

“During this time, he (Alexey Kabeshev - Kommersant ) entered the theater, and he immediately came into good contact with the young team, became familiar with the financial situation in the theater... And how will the problems that the theater faces be solved? It will probably be possible to see it only in a year,” said Mr. Serebrennikov.

In turn, Alexey Kabeshev said that he sees the prerequisites for improving the financial and economic situation in the theater. “In order to reduce costs by the end of this year, operating costs both for the theater itself and for each performance must be urgently reduced... It will be necessary to analyze the staffing table, review all responsibilities and job descriptions, as well as, of course, rates , as for part of the salary,” explained Mr. Kabeshev, noting that some of the theater’s services need to be outsourced, as well as increase the profitability of Gogol Cafe, Gogol School and the theater bookstore.
