In Ukraine, they intend to rename the city of Dzerzhinsk. The corresponding decision, as reports by the Donetsk regional state company, adopted the City Council.
According to LB.ua , the authorities decided that the city should be called the Toretsk - by the name of the river, which flows through it.
Finally, the issue of renaming will have to agree on the Verkhovna Rada.
Earlier, the regional administration proposed a award of 10 thousand hryvnias (about 29 thousand rubles) for the best new alternative name Dzerzhinsk. The Office of Toretsk was proposed by about 15 citizens and organizations. It is assumed that the award can be divided between them.
Dzerzhinsk is located in the Donetsk region. Until 1938, it was called Shcherbinovka. Later was renamed in honor of the head of the Cheka Felix Dzerzhinsky.
Earlier in Ukraine, they decided to rename Artemovsk (also in the Donetsk region). The historical name of Bakhmut will be returned to him.
Decisions were adopted in accordance with the Law on Conviction of the Communist Regime, which was adopted in the spring of 2015. It provides for the rejection of the names related to the Soviet government, as well as the dismantling of monuments to communist figures. In total, according to the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, it is planned to rename more than 900 cities and villages in the country.
