EU granted border guards the right to return migrants to their homeland

At the Summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European Union agreed to expand the powers of the Frontex external boundaries agency to return illegal immigrants to their homeland. This was said by the chairman of the European Council Donald Tusk. The video recording of the press conference is posted on the EU website.

“Our goal is to put Frontex with the right to return illegal migrants on his own initiative and make his activities in protecting external borders more active in terms of preventing crisis situations,” Tusk said.

He noted that the EU member countries are ready to send hundreds of Frontex border guards and the EASO shelter agency.

According to the UN, since the beginning of the year, more than 480 thousand refugees from North Africa and the Middle East have moved to Europe. On September 22, the Ministers of Internal Affairs of the European Union agreed on the distribution of 120 thousand refugees. In early October, it became known that up to 400 thousand migrants can be deported from the EU countries who were refused to grant refugee status.
