Among the Russian assets arrested abroad, pursuant to the decision of the Hague arbitration in the lawsuit of the former shareholders of the Yukos, about 7.5 percent of the EURONEWS shares belonging to the VGTRK. It is reported by RBC.
As a source close to Euronews told the newspaper, the arrest did not affect their work or the activities of the VGTRK. Meanwhile, the expert, to whom the publication turned, noted that the arrest of shares means at least the inability to dispose of them. By court decision, he added, other restrictions can be imposed on the owner, in particular, the ban on receiving dividends.
VGTRK became the shareholder of EURONEWS in 2001. Initially, the Russian broadcaster belonged to 1.8 percent of the shares of this channel, but already in 2004 the VGTRK package grew to 16 percent. In the future, however, the Russian company got rid of about half of its shares.
In July 2014, the arbitration court in the Hague recovered about 50 billion dollars from Russia in the lawsuit of the former shareholders of the Yukos. Since Russia did not start paying to the plaintiffs, in June 2015, the arrests of Russian property began in various Western countries. So, Russia's assets were arrested in France and Belgium . The shareholders also filed applications for executive measures in a lawsuit in the courts of the United States, Great Britain and Germany , since in these countries, unlike France and Belgium, property cannot be arrested without sanction.
On October 23, the State Duma adopted a law on measures in response to the arrests of Russian property abroad. According to the document, a foreign state, which brought a lawsuit in the Russian court or otherwise, has been refused by the trial of judicial immunity, and this refusal regarding a specific dispute extends to all stages of the proceedings and can not be recalled.
