Radio engineer Gennady Kravtsov recognized as a political prisoner

The Human Rights Center "Memorial" recognized as a political prisoner the radio engineer Gennady Kravtsov, who was sentenced by the Moscow City Court to 14 years in prison on a case of high treason. Kravtsov, who previously worked in the structures of the Main Intelligence Directorate, was convicted for allegedly divulging information constituting state secrets by sending a resume to a Swedish company.

According to Memorial Human Rights Center, an analysis of the circumstances and chronology of the case made it possible to conclude that the case against Kravtsov was politically motivated. It was initiated three years after the engineer sent his resume, already in the period of an aggressive state policy aimed at finding internal enemies, "spies" and "traitors to the motherland." The defense and the convict himself during the investigation and in court were deprived of access to a number of secret documents, in violation of which Kravtsov was accused. The commission that conducted the key examination of the case included former colleagues of Kravtsov, which could affect the objectivity of its results.
