The first leader of the world proletariat in history was to realize that terror could and should be a means of not only suppressing the enemies of communism, but an obligatory, indispensable means of building it. This contribution to the treasury of left thought cannot be overestimated, if we take into account that terror as a builder of a new life, then intensifying, then weakening, existed until the end of the greatest of social experiments.
