The Ministry of Defense of Poland may turn to NATO with a request to place nuclear weapons on its territory. The deputy head of the military department Tomash Shatkovsky said this opportunity, reports Associated Press. This is the first such statement at the official level, the agency notes.

As part of the NATO strategy of "joint use of nuclear weapons" in Poland, American tactical nuclear weapons can be placed. According to Shatkovsky, this will increase the defense capacity of the country. Currently, the United States is placing its atomic bombs in the territory of five alliance countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

As the press service of the Polish Ministry of Defense explained , "the deputy minister should be interpreted in the context of the emerging comments of serious analytical centers in the West, indicating a shortage of nuclear deterrence on the eastern NATO flank." The department also noted that Poland is involved in the contract on non -proliferation of nuclear weapons, so "the government does not have plans to receive such weapons."

In September, it became known about US plans to place in Germany a new type of tactical atomic bombs. The Kremlin said that this "could lead to a violation of strategic balance in Europe," and threatened with response measures. Moscow has repeatedly spoke out against the NATO strategy for joint use of nuclear weapons.
