On November 28, in the port of the port of Nevelsk on Sakhalin, the Nadezhda tanker sat in a melon, in the tanks of which there were 786 tons of oil products (426 tons of diesel fuel and 360 tons of fuel oil). The ship standing on the raid was thrown out in the wind during the storm. The tanker received a hole, a machine department was flooded, a fuel leak began. The crew of the vessel - eight people - was taken ashore and did not suffer.

Residents of Nevelsk on the same day reported that the wind brings a strong smell of diesel fuel from the sea; The public organization "Ecological Watch Sakhalin" said that the coastline for about five kilometers is contaminated with oil products. The authorities said that the oil spill was quickly localized and does not pose a danger to the environment, but on November 30, ecologists began to find injuries from the spill of sea birds. On their own, they saved about 60 cormorants, but survived, as reported in the Laboratory of Sakhalin Energy (the only place for the rehabilitation of animals on the island) only nine birds. The Nadezhda tanker is still on Frales in fact within the city, the threat of a new leak remains.

On Sakhalin there is no state organization or institution that can professionally assess the scale of the environmental disaster, and Ekovakhta Sakhalin, which worked in the region for 20 years, was recently recognized as a “foreign agent”. On December 6, about 150 volunteers from among local residents went out to clean the Naberezhny Nevelsk fuel oil, which is considered one of Sakhalin’s main attractions. In one day they cleaned 10 thousand square meters of coastal territory and collected 450 soil bags. The work of volunteers was watched by photographer Oleg Klimov .
