According to unofficial data, about two million labor migrants arrive in Moscow every year. Only 30 % of them do this officially. Laws regulating the order of stay and the work of migrants are tightened, patents are expensive, the procedure for registration is long and contradictory, so most of the migrants live and work illegally in Russia.
Armed conflicts, inter -religious ramps, interethnic clashes, diseases and poverty drive people from their native places, forces them to go in search of a better life to other countries. Many of them are not able to pay for rental housing and patents for work. They settle in abandoned houses, cellars, sometimes little suitable for life.
At the same time, money is made on illegal immigrants, sometimes considerable. It is no secret that there is a shadow business to create illegal hostels in the territories of the industrial zone, on the outskirts of cities, in premises, which are inappropriate for housing. The owners of these dormitories for little money settle migrants there, deliberately violating the law. And the police and the Federal Migration Service regularly arrange raids in such places.
After terrorist attacks in Paris and Egypt, law enforcement agencies tightened control over migrants in Russia, and checks of documents and raids to identify illegal hostels became more frequent.
In my photo project, I wanted to show people who, although they live in Moscow, are outlawed and are a step away from deportation. I shot them during the police detention in places of illegal residence, during inspections and special events that regularly organize law enforcement agencies.
