25 years ago, on December 23, 1990, a referendum was held in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia as part of the federal Yugoslavia, which asked the question: "Should Slovenia be a sovereign and independent state?" Almost 90% of those who took part in the voting answered this question in the affirmative. The independence of the Republic of Slovenia was officially proclaimed on June 25, 1991. The ensuing attempt by the Belgrade authorities to restore their control over Slovenia by military means failed.
