Traveling is a long -standing entertainment. Colta.ru gives its readers the opportunity to become companions of our favorite authors.
There was an acquaintance with very eminent cities; I could not stand it and for the first time in my life leafed through some books before, and not after the trip. In the punishment (and on edification), Italy did not want to let me in for a long time.
We flew with a transplant, through Frankfurt, there it was necessary to wait for a flight to Bologna for an hour and a half. This is a ticket. And on the scoreboard against our flight stood the word “canceled”. It sounded somehow too finally and categorically, and there was no one to ask for a decisively; Living people are not supposed to be there. Some passed-not the best-the time before we found out that the flight was still not completely canceled, but only moved for four hours. There will be almost six with those one and a half, and this somehow was already too vividly reminded of a long-standing exit to the same Frankfurt. Apparently, they combined two flights, not informing anyone. I will try not to use the services of the Luftganza company.
And in general, if possible, do not find yourself in these parts. Public servants are not again in Italy, to say about Germany. In this sense, they have some kind of special gift. He only looked and made a pen, a certain imperative gesture, and I was already mutating in my head from rage. This rage, apparently, was felt by his partner at the metal detector (they are a little animals) and intended to feel something illegal in my seams of shirts and trousers. The search indecently dragged on. Such a dense and prolonged physical contact with the face of my gender for the first time.
Everything continued in Bologna, but already with Italian humanity: not six hours, but only forty minutes - the train to Ravenna was so late. Finally he arrived and we ended up in Ravenna. True, not during the day, as expected, but late in the evening.
Ravenna is good, but not great. Flat, many new buildings - the allies bombed him. But in San Vital they did not hit, missed, and the great mosaics of the sixth century were preserved.
We lived in the house across the road. I went out to smoke and stood, looking from the cathedral to the old plain five girths, on high pin. The twisted leaves rustled along the fan of the cobblestone pavement. San Vitale stood, diluting his Arkbutans, like a giant crab. The bells in Ravenna are usually round in plan, and the one that San Vital is similar to the mosque. Muratov writes that all Ravenna churches "seem gloomy and rather awkward buildings." So over a hundred years, the look changed; And it is clear that the taste of Muratov, with all the breadth, was still “sharpened” on the classic.
The most famous (and beautiful) mosaics are Ravenna in San Vital, and also in the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. They are nearby, in one fenced courtyard, the mausoleum is even closer to our house. Among the Mosaic of the Mausoleum there is one completely early (“good pastor”), ancient in spirit and completely amazing. You understand this not immediately. At first I examined it near: yes, beautiful, pleasant soft tones. Then he walked away and accidentally turned around: the mosaic suddenly lit up, sparkled with gold dashes, as if the sunset sun had made his way through the smalt. She shone.
This radiance entered me. I hope forever.
In the oldest church of the city of San Jovanni-Evandzelist, there were also mosaics, but disappeared in the 16th century (Baroque !!), only some flooring remained, which are now exhibited along the walls. Interestingly, the late ones are completely primitive and resemble children's drawings. The Church of St. Agatha inside is also empty, bleached. In her altar, the schoolboy girls sang under the guitar (but without a balaclava), and on the sidelines their classmates were waiting for their turn for confession. Opposite the house with a sign about Torkvato Tasso, nearby, at the church of St. Francis, Grave Dante. Several outlandish stories are connected with this burial, but not to retell the guide.
There are mosaics of the fifth or sixth centuries in other churches: in the Cathedral Baptisturia of the Orthodox (there are saints in the dome, in the moves of the chitons of chitons there are no late mosaic statics), in the Arian Baptistria, in Sant-Apollinar-Nuovo (wonderful ridiculous magicians in colored tights and Frisian caps) and Sant-Apollinare-In-class. The last outside the city, and we stopped there already on the fourth day, on the way to Moden.
Modena is a large rich city. Large scale, red guards of palaces, wide boulevards. Duomo (XI -XII centuries) is surrounded by porticoes with columns standing on lions. Two lions are huge, red marble. But the cathedral itself is closed, restoration. All of them restore something, clean, do not clean.
From Modena went to a new parking lot, to Monteombrare Mountain. The flat area ended, the hills began, then the mountains. On the slopes, vineyards are yellow, green, red, brown. In small towns, simple boring buildings in contrast look strange, as in the paintings of de Kiriko. Especially in the fog. Closer to the new house, the road went with a steep serpentine, and we just drove into a dense, almost without view, fog - into a low cloud.
The house is a square in terms of a guard (?) Tower, stained with ivy. The hostess Sylvia remade her in the hotel in five levels, very comfortable, cozy. And - unlike Ravenna - warm.
The tower stands on the slope of the mountain, and this time the review was not on all four sides, only for two. A cool slope begins behind, a thicket of oaks and chestnuts. In silence, only the rustle of leaves and the knock of falling acorns and chestnuts. Their tuned skins are similar to huge dead caterpillars. Sylvia in five minutes scored a whole braid of chestnuts and taught to fry them in the fireplace: you need to make an incision so that they do not explode.
There are people somewhere, but they are not visible and not heard. Only once a strange man in an orange vest with two dogs and a rifle passed me. I greeted, he did not answer and turned up the slope, into the thicket.
The next day it was clear, but a dense cloud stood below, and the surrounding mountains protruded from it like islands. We went to Bologna.
Bologna - the city is also large and large -scale. They bombed him somehow ineptly: they destroyed only the area built by the buildings of the thirties of the last century, and the old part mostly survived. The whole city is made of brick, painted with red ocher, everywhere faced brick pillars with capitals like composite. The city is slightly gloomy, or rather, gloomy. The fact that he is amazing, we did not understand right away. First we went to the central squares, to the Church of San Petronio, whose famous facade of the Jacopo Della Querchi was a clear thing, hung with a canvas (restoration). Inside the "Madonna" and "St. Sebastian »Lorenzo Costa. Passed the Palace of the Podest of the work of Aristotle of our Fioravanti; We ate in the side street. Well -fed and satisfied, reached its end, went to Piazza Della Merkanzia .
And stopped, stunned. This is a triangular area where arcades crawl into each other, the second floors on curly consoles, carved balconies, a black fachwerk (XIII century) and God knows what else. The triangle has its own proboscis, it leads to the area with two towers, one of which is high with a skyscraper, and the second leaned twice as steeper than Pizanskaya. Five streets converge to this square, and it is immediately clear that the energy center of the city is here. One of the streets, completely straight, with arcades on both sides, leads to the church of S.Maria Dei Servi (XIV -XV centuries), in front of which a square arched court. Completely different, but equally marvelous spaces replace each other, as in a dream.
In this church, Madonna Chimabue is wonderful, bright; On the sides are two angels with wings from red to blue. Then the girl played on the organ.
On the same street there is a passage through the house of the XIII century. (with wooden pillars) to Piazza S.Stefano - also triangular. One of its sides is four churches that have grown into one, some kind of transcendental: with inlaids, a brick braid on a drum, a light reddish brick. The oldest is the left, the fifth century, but the middle one is on the foundation of the Roman temple, an octagonal with beveled corners, almost round. Inside the circular gallery on powerful round - either single, then double - pillars, and in the center - a copy (very conditional) of the Kuvuklia of the Jerusalem Temple of the Holy Sepulcher.
There is also S. Francesco of the thirteenth century, Gothic S. Domenico , before both sarcophagi with green Shatriks on high pillars - the graves of Bologna glossators (teachers of law). In the last two perfect masterpieces, one is famous, the second, it seems, is not. The first is the sarcophagus Nikolo Pisano (1267), there are still many figures above it, later, three of them are early Michelangelo, and one (an angel with a candle) is Nicolo Dell'arca . And she is better than Michelangelo. The second masterpiece is the altar Pisano Crocifissso : a flat field with a chess break. The altar is beautiful, the finest, and it is easy to miss it: it is not indicated anywhere and is located so that you will not notice, on the side of the left altar chapel.
On the way to the parking lot, they again passed through the center past the famous university. There was a small demonstration with megaphones and orange flags in defense of some revolt. Sounded screams like "espresso si, Americano but." In general, I agree.
You enter the mantle through the lake along a long bridge; This is a fortress city. (A small battle with an automatic toilet near the walls of the fortress ended in the victory of the toilet.) Virgil was born here.
Mantia - the town is dry, grayish, very cramped (which we love) and frankly poor. I liked mantle, left some complicated, puppy impression. There are few people, almost deserted. Circle, leave the leaves; melancholic desolation. Some pallor appears through the gray plaster and half-worn ocher. The city is unhealthy.
Immediately at the gate, everything is important: the central square, the cathedral, the palace, the castle. Behind the palace is still a handful of either their courtyards, or small areas made on one motive; For example, arcade of double columns with painted arches. The cathedral was designed by Juliano Romano, but the S.andrea Church with the Facade of Alberti is more interesting: a strange white-gramor (on the facade) construction with a deep portico. Inside - a huge space with a cylindrical arch, similar to the station; The grave of the mante.
For the sake of Manteans, everyone here and come: watch the Deli Sorzi camera painted. But by our arrival, she was just closed for repairs. In addition to her, the palace has a wonderful, but very poorly preserved (besides unfinished) Fresco Pisanello: the battle of Knight-Scorpions against a carbon-blue background. The rest is the endless anfilads of rooms with rude wall murals and ceremonial portraits of medium -sized quality.
The road from us to Tuscan goes through the mountains, lilac-green apennins, along the gorges where small waterfalls are hit from the rocks; Test clouds are clinging to the valleys. So we came to Pisa. In Pisa, the sun through the clouds and real heat.
For some reason, we started with Kamposanto, maybe right: it would be sad to end them. There is almost nothing there, everything burned in a fire after the bombing.
In the cathedral, in the upper Lunets of Transept, - Chimabue mosaics; I’m not sure that both, but the left (“Annunciation”) is for sure: the angel has the same paradise plumage as in Bologna. In Baptisteria, the brilliant (as always) department Nikolo Pisano: three wonderful lions hug (however, strongly grinding) with the front paws of the hare, dog, lamb.
Lucca is also shabby, but this city is so marvelous, so joyful-firm, with such an incredible texture that there is no thought of some kind of pain there. This is a city of bended streets with brick palaces of the XIII century and impressions of small areas, which are located white -bore inlaid churches with lions on patterned consoles. Here, like in Rome: on every corner you can stand for hours, unable to move away. There is an oval square based on the Roman amphitheater. Behind her, the S.Frediano church with a mosaic portico of the XIII century, and then S.Micele (VI - XII centuries) with a fantastic facade: at the top there are four arcature belts, all columns and capitals are different, some twisted or double. There is also an inlay. Almost the same, only a little heavier - in Duomo (XII century).
All this, coupled with the complex in Pisa, is called "Italian Podesterenessance." What if? The term of the beginning of the twentieth century and still causes disputes. I have my observation in his support: on the semicircular absids of San Mikele and San Frediano, elegant and seemingly antique columns go on top, and all together looks like a halting ancient rotunda. Or a bell tower in Pisa: a complete rotunda, only elongated up, like a tint pipe.
In one of the limits of Duomo there is a tomb of Illaria, the works of Jacopo Della Querchi (1406) - bewitching; Strange-tex, glazed marble.
On the way back, the navigator indicated a new road, which turned out to be some kind of super-serpentine, and we rode along it for two and a half hours in the dark and impenetrable fog.
I only knew about Ferrara that it was “stale”, and a stern, gloomy city with its special expression seemed. But it is precisely a pronounced personality that the current Ferrara does not have, unlike most historical Italian cities. Either lost, or not. Now this city is boring and quite depressed. Literally at every step, a person with an outstretched hand comes up to you (usually black, but there are exceptions) and begins to talk about his family difficulties. We still arrived on a bazaar day, and the entire Cathedral Square was forced by tents.
But the cathedral itself is amazing. On the portal of the western facade (1135) an unusual detail: the columns rest on the bases not on the back of lions, but on the neck of the twisted (and as if frightened) “Atlanteans” sitting on the benches; And the bench is already standing on the back of the lion. There are two lions, one holds between the paws of the bull, the other Aries. There are still many miracles on this facade: sinners are thrown into the boiler, the righteous people get out of the coffins and so on. Romanesque reliefs are always very entertaining and instructive.
We were partly lucky that Ferrara was not too interesting: there was time left, and we decided to call into one abbey, about which we did not hear before the trip, but we spied the picture back in Ravenna, in a bookstore. This is almost on the coast, called Abbazia di Pomposa . Such random things usually turn out to be the happiest. In its present form, the temple and the bell tower (marvelous) are the tenth to one century, but it all started there four centuries earlier. The same light reddish joyful brick that in the Bologna San Stepheno, also inlay and inserts in the form of colored plates. Inlapped (huge circles) or mosaic floors.
In the middle of the fourteenth century, the church from the head to the heels was painted with frescoes. (In some places there were pieces of earlier painting-in notches and completely simple.) The northern wall is almost not rewritten (and thank you) that you can’t say about other walls and altars. Who rewritten is incomprehensible. Maybe the monks hired local craftsmen for copper money, but in Italy sometimes such a restoration that you can’t distinguish from local for copper money. It was necessary to look without glasses, but I, a fool, realized late. But still: when everything is completely painted, this is some other space. It is filled with colored air, reddish, pale. In hoarse, brick, bluish, greenish tones there is an air movement of a coherent story.
The sun, meanwhile, moved to sunset. Around green fields, pin, groves of young rubber trees. Glass of heron, pheasant-handsome. The sun through the clouds.
We still drove into the town of Comaccho on the coast. He is all in the channels - "Little Venice." There is a complex arched bridge on two sides, through a diverging channel, but the evening life of a small Italian town is also curious.
Day ninth: Verona. Verona is indescribable.
Having gone with impressions, they went to Parma only behind the ham. On the way, we drove into the mountain town of Castell'arquato Val d'Arda , made according to the Tuscan principle: Street to the mountain, at the top of the square, on Duomo Square of yellowish limestone and PAL. Podesta with a steep porch. From the square view of the foggy valley.
Entered Parma through a huge Pal. Pilotta , and the legs themselves led to the Cathedral Square, where Duomo (XI -XII centuries) and Baptisteria (XII century). The facade of the cathedral from the same yellow-gray limestone; The speakers of the forceps climb the steps. All interior space is painted, but already at the end of the sixteenth century. And what's the difference! Instead of cauliflower-dull, stupefying, crumbling fog, dull and dense, brown-gray, settled in the corners. And after all, the artists were skilled, beautiful drawers, and Michelangelo were clearly inspired. But nothing could be done: time changed, its color changed. New vision will occur already in another country (the Netherlands).
In the dome of the cathedral, the famous painting is the Corredo, but I admit, I did not pay attention to it.
Baptisteria of white-pink marble, as usual, is octagonal. Outside, it is dry and inexplicably resembles a multi -storey building. Inside, everything is different: the corners of the octagonist are emphasized by double columns continued by the couples; Each line is crossed-one above the other-two longitudinal niches that have two columns-cute, elegant, as if teenage sisters of those angular holes. In their ratio and rhythm there is some touching subtlety. Touching and joyful space.
All the frescoes of the Baptisteria - except for one niche - the guide dates the fourteenth century, and this is strange: two schools are clearly visible there with a difference of at least half a century. In Lunet - earlier reliefs; On one, King David plays on the gusls, he is listened to by children with a violin and other musical instruments.
Everything continues on the street, only live: a gypsy orchestric plays of four cheerful plague performers.
And they were not mistaken.
Beaches.
