In Great Britain, France, Spain and Scotland there were taxes on windows. Because of this, some windows in houses were bricked up. This was not enough for the French and they introduced taxes on doors.

In addition, in the UK there were separate taxes on brick, fireplace (chimney), wallpaper and window glass - this was a very serious tax - 300%. There were taxes on cowardice, taxes on playing cards, on watches and on hats."
