The chief of the GRU, the deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Colonel General Igor Sergun suddenly died at the age of 58. This follows from a telegram with condolences, which Vladimir Putin sent on Monday to the relatives of the deceased. Exposure from the telegram is placed on the Kremlin website.

The detailed biography of Sergun, as well as other senior GRU officers, is classified as a state secret. It is known that he was born on March 28, 1957, graduated from the Moscow Higher Combined Arms Command School, as well as the military academies of the Soviet Army and the General Staff. He knew several foreign languages. He had a degree of candidate of military sciences. He worked in the GRU since 1984.

At the same time, in 1998, Sergun was a Russian military attache in Albania. Later, he was awarded the medal "Member of the march on June 12, 1999 Bosnia - Kosovo."

The post of chief of the GRU Sergun has been held since December 2011.
