Türkiye is about to sue Russia

Turkey decided to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization and appeal to international courts in connection with the imposition of Russian sanctions and pressure on Turkish business in Russia. This was announced by the Minister of Economy of Turkey Mustafa Elitas.

The minister claims that Turkish businessmen are being pressured in Russia to transfer their stakes in the business to Russian partners. “In trade, too, there must be a moral basis. These entrepreneurs trusted the Russian government and invested in the country,” Elitash said.

“In international courts, we will restore the rights of all those who have suffered,” Elitash added (English).

• The sanctions against Turkey came after Turkish fighter jets shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber on a mission in Syria on November 24. Türkiye claims that the Su-24 violated its airspace. Russia insists that the plane did not cross the air border.
• Restrictive measures against Turkey include a food embargo (first of all, vegetables and fruits were included in the list of prohibited products), the abolition of the visa-free regime and a ban on organized tourism to Turkey. At the end of December, the sanctions were expanded - Turkish companies were banned from engaging in construction and tourism in Russia.
