
The Mendeleev table was replenished with four elements with the 113th, 115th, 117th and 118th atomic numbers, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the website of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry. The elements are assigned temporary names, and permanent will appear in the table after five months.
The particular difficulty in obtaining new elements was that they break up into previously unknown isotopes of lighter elements that have yet to be determined. All four new elements were artificially synthesized - in nature there are no elements heavier than uranium, that is, with atomic numbers (the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom) more than 92.
As previously reported, the Japanese National Institute of Natural Sciences (Riken) was officially recognized as the discoverer of the 113th element. Thus, the institute earned the right to give the name to this element. There is an assumption that the element will receive the name of Japan.
The right to name elements with atomic numbers 115, 117 and 118 belongs to the Russian-American group of scientists from the United Institute of Nuclear Research in Dubna, the Livermach National Laboratory in California and the National Laboratory of OK Ridge in Tennessee. The new elements are assigned the temporary names of UnunPentium (UnunPentium - UUP), UNUNCEPTION (Ununseptium - UUS) and Ununocum (UnunoCtium - UUO), and after five months their real names and two -letter designations will appear in the periodic table.
The last time the new elements in the periodic table were included in 2011-then the 114th and 116th elements opened by Russians and Americans were added to it. They received the names of the Fleroviy and Livermory.
The first name is given in honor of the Soviet nuclear physicist Georgy Nikolayevich Flerov, in the laboratory of which the first isotopes of the 114th element were synthesized. Flerov founded JSI in Dubna, discovered a spontaneous division of uranium nuclei, participated in the first synthesis of the 103-106th elements of the table of chemical elements.
The name Livermory is proposed in honor of the Liverrand Laboratory and the California city of Livermore, in which it is located. American scientists from LLNL write that they took part in the synthesis of several super-heavy elements, including the 116th element, in Dubna.
