Sergey Medvedev: We congratulate you on the new year and on the upcoming Orthodox Merry Christmas - those who celebrate this holiday. And on January 15, the 125th anniversary of the largest poet of Russian literature is celebrated- Osip Mandelstam . For me, this is a number one poet in Russia, and I am very glad that we start the New Year with the words of Mandelstam:
"I was born on the night of the second to the third
January in ninety -one
Unreliable year - and centuries
They surround me with fire. "
These words are all the more relevant that the centuries seem to surround us with fire again. About Mandelstam, about what it means for our modernity, we will talk with the guests: this is the chairman of the Mandelstam society Pavel Nerler and director Roma Liberov. Another good reason for conversation is that Roma Liberov’s film “Save my speech forever” has now been released on the screens. Roma, will there be some kind of television, large rental of this film?
Roma Liberov: It was a fairly wide rental, it is already ending. And the television premiere will happen exactly on the poet’s birthday, January 15 on Channel One.
And on January 15, the 125th anniversary of the largest poet of Russian literature is celebrated-Osip Mandelstam
Sergey Medvedev: I watched this film at the end of the past year. He walked with some fear, because the video clip made me strain a little: there Mandelstam's poems were performed in the Hip-Hop style, the famous rapper Noize MC read the poem "Save my speech forever for the taste of misfortune and smoke." But the film reproduced the Mandelstam style incredibly adequately for our time. Roma, have you been looking for some new language for the reproduction of Mandelstam? The film is animated, clip, with elements of raP, reading.
Roma Liberov: The writer who does not seek a new language is stupid, regardless of what he is doing. This is the destiny of each generation. Your fears are general, average concerns. We bring to interaction with any work our finished assessment system. This is a rather vicious situation. It is necessary to take off knightly armor from hearts and other lyvern insides and see what is happening, and not to project itself on what is happening around.
Sergey Medvedev: Pavel, how do you like the translation of this style?
Pavel Nerler: I observed all the work, knew the previous works of Roma. And even among the musical accompaniment of the evening memory of Nadezhda Mandelstam on October 30, 2014 (on her birthday), this song, the first version of the musical clip, sounded. That is, I was prepared for this.
Roma Liberov: The premiere of the film was held as part of the festival "Cherry Forest" on October 12 in Moscow, in GUM, but the windows went out exactly where all the executioners were.
Sergey Medvedev: Do you think Mandelstam loved Red Square?
The writer who is not looking for a new language is stupid
Roma Liberov: He wrote everything about this. "On Red Square of the whole firm, the earth, // and its slope is voluntary." He loved and did not love the module. "A hat purchased in Gum // Ten years ago, // Under you, like hegumen, // I look old."
Sergey Medvedev: Roma, I think about your filmography - Brodsky, Olesha, Dovlatov, Vladimov, Ilf and Petrov, now Mandelstam ...
Roma Liberov: Now Platonov is already.
Sergey Medvedev: When are you going to finish Platonov?
Roma Liberov: I hope, until the end of 2017.
Sergey Medvedev: Does these people unite something in common?
Roma Liberov: These are the largest figures of the Russian language.
Sergey Medvedev: This is understandable.
Roma Liberov
Roma Liberov: And this is enough. Nothing else unites us, it all ended. There is no set of similar signs by which we are able to unite. But the Russian language remains still. He, of course, is different, of course, he is also subjected to violence. There is a wild bureaucratic language that levels any event - you simply do not understand what is at stake. But still our Russian language remained.
Sergey Medvedev: “Save my speech forever” - is this a motto of all your films? Are you trying to save the language of the authors?
Nothing else unites us, it all ended. But the Russian language has still remained
Roma Liberov: No, we are developing a movie language. It's just an interesting, amazing and almost impossible task. We are fighting, we have no choice but to translate the language in our highest manifestations into a cinema language.
Sergey Medvedev: Pavel, how do you determine the genre of what Roma is doing? Is this animation, collage, mixed genre?
Pavel Nerler: Of course, a mixed genre. A certain hybrid movie language that Roma needs in this scene in this place. These are the ratios of different layers - there is an animation, and a puppet game, and the ordering of real living artists, and much more, I'm not talking about sound, there are sound layers. In different parts of the film, this is all in different proportions. The film on the genre, rather, such a movie border, everything goes strictly strictly according to the patterns of the Mandelstam fate.
Sergey Medvedev: Roma, I am trying to combine your heroes for myself, besides the fact that these are the keepers of Russian speech that you will reproduce with your cinema language. They, it seems to me, everyone became strangers, became emigrants, were torn by the medium. Olesha, who has been spent in the buffet of the House of Writers, Dovlatov, pushed into emigration, Vladimov - also in exile, Brodsky ...
Joseph Brodsky said: "Avoid attributing to yourself the status of the victim"
Roma Liberov: Joseph Brodsky said: "Avoid attributing to yourself the status of the victim." The language fixes the experience of living, its task is to ultimately convey to us this experience of living. Those six modest works that we composed are six different experiences of living an individual in a march. And the marching era, in principle, especially in our country, is almost always. This experience of living an individual, not sacrifice comes to us. I think Osip Emilievich in his healthy, adequate periods of residence would be dissatisfied if he found out that he was attributed to the status of the victim, he would deny him.
Sergey Medvedev: Is it objective? "A century-wolfhound throws me on my shoulders"-was there this sensation?
Roma Liberov: But it ends than: "Because I’m not a wolf by my blood // and only the equal will kill me." There is no victim status. I need to survive this, wait out: "Take me away in the night where the Yenisei flows // and the pine gets to the star." “Send me,” he says.
Dzhugashvili is a politician of the Mandelstam period
I was told an amazing story about one doctor. When this cannibalic era came, plus the notorious law on sodisting (and he was a homosexual) was introduced for many decades), he took refuge in the only possible way: he asked the doctor somewhere, almost to Kolyma, to the camps, and thus escaped everything that could threaten him. Do not need this status of the victim! Our gaze is retrospective, it seems to us that in large volume it is impossible to endure. But when this large volume breaks for every day, every moment and every second, it turns into an infinite number of small volumes. Even at the moment of despair, Mandelstam follows a marvelous Jewish vitality, and then this does not turn into one great grief.
Paul was published by the book “Who would Remove” (at the Fire “Non Fikshn” there was her presentation). We know who won today. Many times sounding the banality that "Dzhugashvili is the politician of the Mandelstam period" has the right to exist. We have not yet figured out the past, but we will never re -read the works of Stalin, and Mandelstam's poems lie on the table every day.
Pavel Nerler
Pavel Nerlaler: At some point, especially in the light of Mandelstam's phrases that “the artist’s death is his last creative act,” arose and mastered the majority of the temptation to believe that he himself deliberately followed this paradigm: he wrote poetry and ensured that they reached the necessary ears-this is, as it were, such a form of suicide. I also thought so for a long time, but at some point I stopped. Firstly, Mandelstam was an unusually cheerful person, and such programming does not fit with this. Secondly, at each stage of life, Mandelstam had difficult relations with the authorities, there were attempts to look for a common language with it, up to the point that one colleague was examplen that Mandelstam was a nomenclature poet of the early 30s, only because Stalin did not delete his name from the list of participants in the future meeting of the Organizing Congress of Writers.
Around Mandelstam all the time there is not much concern for the struggle. They will announce that he is the last Orthodox poet, they will announce that he is the last or penultimate Jewish poet ...
Sergey Medvedev: Now Roma says: Jewish vitality, vitality. Did he really have it?
We will never re -read the collected works of Stalin, and Mandelstam's poems lie on the table every day
Roma Liberov: He was a Russian poet - this is enough. He was an outstanding poet of the Russian language. There was Jewish in it, it was a marvelous Jewish, not even really related to an ethnic, but belonging, rather, to the highest spheres.
Sergey Medvedev: That is, the "Black Sun" - these images?
Roma Liberov: "My staff, my freedom - // The core of being, // Will the truth of the people soon // will my truth become?" This was not applicable even to some religious views. My grandfather, a classic small -town Jew from Ukraine, went through the whole war, served in the Soviet army for 25 years. I don’t know where he got it and what it was-this is some kind of genetic power of counteraction, what I call "Jewish vitality". This is not even connected with nationality, but with some genetics, with some other 40th chromosome. In Mandelstam, all this was, but was also aggravated by the go -ahead of the mood of a purely personal nature. This is how much he could fall, he could just as much and laugh to tears. An amazing, elusive, very ambivalent essence - it is dear to us, of course.
Remember, Akhmatova once said that it was one thing to cut a finger to an ordinary person, another to the poet: a poet ten times more painfully. It seems to me that she had in mind the multiplication of an experiencing body of some specific physical pain or some kind of situation, when the body builds all this many times: both joy and grief.
Pavel Nerler: Such a physiology ascending to the degree.
Sergey Medvedev: Value glass.
We talked about the temperament of Mandelstam. Roma describes it as a choleric type, which can be subjected to periods of depression, and then, on the contrary, pervasion with a phoenix.
Roma Liberov: Osip Emilievich, judging by the descriptions, did not belong to any of these types, he was a little more complicated. Type is always something average. I suppose he could well be philosophizing, could be very rational. I think that, being built into the state system, he was even a prudent in something. He could be very persistent. After all, it was a small writing extension in Nashchokinsky Lane: he managed to get an apartment there. I believe that he was very different. Avoid all these definitions. There is nothing. In this sense, there are no centuries of civilizations.
Sergey Medvedev: Yes, Mandelstam is a certain stream, a stream of words, a stream of personality, a stream of consciousness.
Pavel Nerler: "He sculpts the experience from the babble // and drinks the babble out of experience."
Akhmatova once said that it was one thing to cut a finger to an ordinary person, another to the poet: a poet ten times more painfully
Roma Liberov: Moreover, in general, denying this experience! See what he says, being a student, a young man, and how early he understood this: “There is no need to say anything // nothing should be taught .// And sad is so good // Dark animal soul. // does not want to teach anything, // He does not know how to say at all ./ and floats to the young dolphin // On the world's granaries.” I am already silent: "Perhaps, before the lips, a whisper was already born, // and the sheets were circling in the abyss." And then - the most important thing: "And those to whom we devote experience, // Before experience we gained features." This is a complete denial of experience.
Sergey Medvedev: I read Ivanov: there is an idea that this is Popper Third Universe, that there is an image of the world and signs that exist before human experience, and we sometimes get some access to them. In this sense, Mandelstam was a universal medium. His way of being in the then social environment, in history and in Russian culture ... We will even avoid such a definition as "blessed", "holy fool", "joking". After all, it is no coincidence that Viktor Sukhorukov, who was on my air, reads the poems of Mandelstam in your film, and I understood that this is a brilliant jester, a brilliant person who could trust the role of a holy fool and so on. Didn't you have a holy for the key, like a key figure in Russian culture? Recall, Khodasevich called him "the All -Kectube Mosque."
Roma Liberov: Found whom to listen! Georges Ivanova still listen. I think if they said to Mandelstam: “Osip Emilievich, you are an all -commune laughingshop”, he would have laughed the first and still say: “Yes? Alkhoktebel, right? But is it not all -Krym? No, let me go to Yalta, I want me to be called that in Yalta. It's great!”
At every stage of life, Mandelstam had difficult relations with the authorities
Pavel Nerler: In this case, this does not mean anything. In this Mandelstam phenomenon, another is amazing. In a personal chaos (or space at the same time), about which Roma started the question, Mandelstam had the ability to look into the future with some periscope. And this is not the prophecy in the classic form. In his life, this happened almost regularly. Due to the trifle, such passions-mordacles, scandals begin, and even consciously brought to some universal scale, with Ulenspiegel, for example. Then you understand that this is not the point, not in Gornfeld , not in the situation with the mistake of the publishing house, but we are talking about the highest problems that the Russian poet could burden in the state in which he lived. The 1928 situation became clear only after a few years. Mandelstam once lived at the same time in some of his and our future.
Roma Liberov: "The poet - from afar starts speech. // poet - gets far from speech."
Sergey Medvedev: Which of the actors plays in your film?
Nadezhda Mandelstam, 1923
Roma Liberov: The role of Osip Mandelstam is played by Viktor Sukhorukov. The role of Hope Mandelstam, before the departure of Osip Emilievich, is performed by Miriam Sehon, after the entire finals holds on the shoulders of Inna Churikova. Chulpan Khamatova plays Marina Tsvetaeva. Boris Pasternaka in the awkward situation in which he ended up, Evgeny Steblov plays. Alexander Feklistov plays simultaneously the role of both Stavsky and Fadeev. In the role of Anna Akhmatova - Galya Tyunina. A lot of artists of the workshop of Peter Fomenko, the theater art studio Sergei Zhenovach, three more dozen artists.
Sergey Medvedev: And the voice of Stalin?
Roma Liberov: The voice of Dzhugashvili is a great work of my closest comrade, the amazing artist Daniil Crosman. I know him all my life and could not hear where he was - so he hid himself! In my opinion, it sounds wonderful.
Mandelstam had the ability to look into the future with some periscope
Pavel Nerler: With a certain addition: it hurts it hurts on a certain standard idea of Stalin's voice.
Roma Liberov: We have lost a lot of things, dismantled nature, psychophysics ... In a word, I really like it. My outstanding teacher Ivan Mikhailovich Moskvin-Turkhanov, when some criticism acted, always said so, relishing a cigarette: "Send all complaints either to hell or to me." So everything related to claims to the artist is either to hell or to me.
Pavel Nerler: I mean the anecdotal component of Stalin's voice.
Roma Liberov: This was one of the tasks.
Pavel Nerler: There was a wonderful decision to break the role and, accordingly, the voice of Nadezhda Yakovlevna into two clearly defined parts: under Mandelstam and after. Maybe there would be no mistake to introduce two or three characters to the role of Mandelstam. In my perception of the range of the voice of one artist, there is not enough to present the entire evolution of Mandelstam, as it goes in this epic biographical canvas. Sukhorukov tries to be diverse, but his effort is insufficient to reflect the diversity of Mandelstam himself.
Roma Liberov: I will not talk about Viktor Ivanovich - this is my pure essence of joy, pride, love. In general, I sometimes woke up in the middle of the night and thought: such a busy artist, and if he did not agree ... When you compose it, it takes a year, it takes another six months, and only when something has already been done, you decide that you have the right to come to Sukhorukov and offer him it. At that moment, you are not able to introduce anyone else, you have all the money in one bank.
Georgy Chulkov, Maria Petrov, Anna Akhmatova, Osip Mandelstam. Moscow, 1934
And about the "foolishness" I will not spread: there is nothing worse than commenting on my own essay. But in general, the key to the whole story ... if you look carefully through the prism of what I will say now, everything falls into place, and you will understand my attitude to foolishness. This, generally speaking, is the life of the blessed Joseph. Dot.
Sergey Medvedev: Interesting. With all this, he was baptized in Protestant. This was always interested in this: why Protestantism? Were he important to him some perpendiculars?
You can live simultaneously in some other language element, but to break away from the Russian elements and stop being a poet-this is impossible, the torn tongue is not needed
Pavel Nerler: It was the cheaper.
"Трижды блажен тот, кто введет в песнь имя;
Osip Mandelstam
