Progress on compiling a list of opposition for negotiations with Damascus at a tripartite meeting in Geneva could not be achieved, said the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Gennady Gatilov. Without this list, it is difficult to talk about the beginning of the political process of settlement, he emphasized.
Gatilov said that during the negotiations of the Russian Federation, she confirmed his position that the Ahrar-Ash-Sham and Jaish al-Islam group did not see the opposition’s delegation, since this is terrorist organizations. ” Nevertheless, according to the deputy minister, it is still unclear whether these organizations will be included in the final list of the Syrian opposition, Interfax reports.
“This issue (compiling lists of terrorists) at a meeting of the Russian Federation - the United States - the UN was not considered, since it was about the preparation of intersiral negotiations scheduled for January 25,” Gatilov drew attention. “In this context, the UN Secretary General of Syria Staffan de Mischur informed about the contacts that he recently had in the region, an exchange of views on the situation that is being formed in Syrian settlement ... Therefore, all mostly attention was concentrated on these matters. " (Quote for TASS.)
According to Gatilov, the main issue is "drawing up a list of a delegation of the opposition, which would be the interlocutor of the government on the negotiation process." “Unfortunately, in this regard, we cannot fix any movement,” the diplomat emphasized. “Movement towards the formation of a wide representative delegation of the opposition, which would include all the main representatives of opposition groups and currents that exist at the moment.”
The meeting is scheduled for January 25. The organizers hope to put representatives of official authorities and opposition to Syria at the negotiating table. In anticipation of the meeting, reports on the discussion of the upcoming resignation of President Syria Bashar al -Assad became more frequent. In particular, with reference to the internal documents of the White House of the United States, the agency reported that the States hoped for the resignation of Assad no earlier than March 2017. At the same time, the document does not say anything about how exactly the Syrian leader will be suspended from power and what will be with him in the future. In accordance with the US assumptions, the Security Committee and the transition government should be created in Syria in April, the Syrian parliament should be dissolved in May, and the UN Security Council will set out further steps to transfer power to the SAR. Over the next six months - until November 2016 - a project of the new Constitution of Syria will be drawn up, which will be submitted to the general Syrian referendum. According to the schedule, it will take place in January 2017.
