Elena Fanailova: January 19 - Day of the anti -fascist movement in Russia, the Day of memory of Anastasia Baburova and Stanislav Markelova. We will talk about the new tasks of anti -fascists and left.
At our table, part of the Arkady Kot group is a sociologist Oleg Zhuravlev ; And the poet, translator and leader of the group Kirill Medvedev , both are members of the Russian socialist movement. With us Ute Weinmann , political scientist and journalist; Anya Gaskarova , journalist, wife of Antifa Alexei Gaskarov, member of the coordination council of the opposition, "Bolotnik", who is now in conclusion; And Vlad Tupikin , journalist and left activist. In the record we will have Artem Loskutov and Lesha Polikhovich ; And Kolya Oleinikov , also a member of the Arkady Kot team, the group "What to do?", The artist and so on. They are also preparing in St. Petersburg for January 19 there.
Let's see how the procession in the Novopushkinsky square looked in 2012, who was there, what was the atmosphere. I suspect that this year everything can be somehow different ...
(Video recording)
Elena Fanailova: I was then at the rally and I remember that the police showed patience and reacted quite calmly to the fireworks and other things. The acceleration of the anti -fascist rally was in 2010, we also have this chronicle ...
(Video recording)
Elena Fanailova: That's what we expect from the procession that will be held this year? Official permission in Moscow was received for the procession, in St. Petersburg has not been received yet. I have the feeling that street activity is declining, including after repression, after a “swamp business”, and it will already be difficult to collect even such a number of people that were last year. Are activists ready for detentions? With what mood this year can everything happen?
Vlad Tupikin: Yes, five years have passed, and no, probably that drive, and the situation is different. It seems to me, since the permission has been obtained, or rather, approval, since we do not have prohibited demonstrations, according to the Constitution we have the right to freedom of assembly, they are only agreed or not, and this is a agreed demonstration. And we expect that the Moscow City Hall and the Moscow police will behave within the law, and the procession will pass calmly if there are no provocations from ultra -radical nationalists, as it was last year. Are people ready for detentions? It seems to me that people who consciously go out in 2016 at the demonstration, after all that four years ago, we must have been ready for this. Of course, no one is going to bring the situation to the conflict with representatives of the authorities, there is no such task. There was no such task in 2010.
Ute Vainmann: Of course, the mood is now completely different. And I think that there will be fewer people than in 2012 or 2010.
Elena Fanailova: Well, in 2010 there was generally a powerful demonstration!
Ute Vainmann: The most powerful, yes, and this was due to the fact that they recently killed prominent activists, lawyer and journalist. And among those you have shown, there are those who live no longer in Russia, who were forced to leave, and everyone was on emotions, because the anti -fascists killed friends. Now the task is a little different. They continue to kill, but not anti -fascists, and according to the statistics of the Owl Center, only 9 people have been killed over the past year. Although these are still 9 people, and this is not complete statistics. They attack people now, whom we often do not even know by name. Migrants are killed, there are Jews among the dead, these are Xenophobic murders. And Xenophobia worries us, she worried us from the very beginning. But among those who come to the rally, to the procession, I am not sure that everyone is so worried about this. Last year, we witnessed how the Turks were declared undesirable, there were problems with the Ukrainians, new objects of hatred, the circle of enemies constantly arose. And how to work with this is much more difficult. And not even everyone is separated from those who go to the processions, my vision, for example. It is very difficult to speak. We, in fact, have very little talk about how we evaluate the situation now, what anti -fascism is, why we must continue to go to the processions of January 19. This is a memorable day, an anti -fascist day, a traditional date, and everyone understands this, but what kind of filling it is filled - this is not obvious to everyone.
Kirill Medvedev: On the one hand, it’s sad to watch these frames and see people there, some of whom are in prison, some are forced to live abroad, someone was depolitized and generally moved away from the shares, some were killed, and so on. If you look for something positive, in recent years, over the past year, unfortunately, there have been several cases, and I myself have observed it, including young people who are just starting to politicize, and these cases have been very affected by them. First of all, the story of the death of a Tajik boy in St. Petersburg.
Elena Fanailova: Because she shows the degree of xenophobia and the fascist of society, which permeate the vertical of power.
Kirill Medvedev: Yes. And since there was no more or less serious and clear answer to this case, there were separate pickets only for people for whom this is still a serious emotional trauma who understand that this case is only the peak of the iceberg, for them this is a good reason to go to this demonstration on January 19. And I know a lot of people for whom this will be the first such demonstration, in fact. We have lost many lately, many, I hope, will return, but there are new personnel, and this is important.
Elena Fanailova: And there are new reasons, yes ...
Anna Gaskarova: Lesha and I discussed on January 19, and we both will not be present, because I will just go to him for a long date in the colony. It is not very clear what the relevance of going out on January 19, after 7 years. At first it is clear that they demanded to find killers, put customers and so on, and plus it was a very strong emotional shock. Now Bourne participants are in prisons, and it would seem, what else to worry about? We have state anti -fascism, announced, we are fighting the right -wing sentiments that covered Ukraine, and so on, but in fact the situation becomes even worse, despite the fact that the Owl report was called "Lockery in front of the Storm". They talked about the fact that, in general, attacks on the basis of xenophobia and hatred became less. But in general, there is a feeling that further the situation will be much worse. And here we can talk about how, in general, for example, the same group of BORN appeared as the conditions in the country and what mood allowed this to happen. And it seems to me that today all these conditions that have favorably affected radical nationalists who are ready for murders, today they are even more broadcast by the state. That is, we are constantly looking for enemies, and the mood of hatred for everything else is very deeply beginning to penetrate into people. And in fact, today there is the relevance of the march on January 19 not only for friends who knew Stas and Nastya, not only for the left anti -fascist movement, but also for everyone who goes to marches against the war or for the freedom of political prisoners, this is true today for absolutely everyone.
Elena Fanailova: I support your words and I think that not only people from the radical-left spectrum think so, but just sensible people who understand that violence spilled in society, the idea of the taste of violence, the taste of hatred is what is the most dangerous now, and the formulation of "calm before the storm" is very correct.
Oleg Zhuravlev: Indeed, five years have passed, and now, it seems to me that in recent years several new circumstances have appeared that have been changing a very strong context in which the procession will be held on January 19. Firstly, the state itself included a rather powerful patriotic and even nationalist propaganda. When the economic crisis, and there are nothing to feed people, then the legitimation is built on propaganda. And this suffocating atmosphere of the national upsurge lowered on top really makes the anti -fascist movement relevant. It is interesting that the state, as Anya said, is trying not only to become a new speaker of nationalism, but also by a new speaker of anti -fascism.
Elena Fanailova: I am always amazing at me how he succeeds! This schizophrenic design successfully exists and is cheerfully advanced by central channels.
Oleg Zhuravlev: Yes. And of course, against the backdrop of the so -called state anti -fascism, in connection with the events in Ukraine, in the same way, the anti -fascist procession will be very relevant on January 19. When we went to the first procession in 2010, we were amazed and inspired by the fact that there is an anti-fascist movement in Russia, it is wide, and it does not come down only to some overturned activists. A lot of people came out, there were ordinary people, parents with children. And it seems to me that this year, against the backdrop of this state nationalism, on the one hand, on the one hand, and state anti-fascism on the other, I want to see and feel the same as there is an anti-fascist movement, it is basket, it is truly anti-fascist and does not come down to state ideological manipulations.
Elena Fanailova: I asked to answer Artem Loskutov, the artist, the author of the famous "monstrium" and the activist, how is he going to carry out on January 19, what does he see the relevance of the history of this?
Artem Loskutov: I want to go to the procession, the traditional procession that takes place every year, which should take place, it seems to me every year, while there is the problem due to which it is carried out. It is memorial, it is in memory of the murder of Markelov and Baburova, but it is anti -fascist, this is the main anti -fascist event in the year. Fascism from marginal gangs turned into a more popular plane, it can practically say that its individual signs are external aggression, militarism, the search for an internal enemy, all this, it is present in our today's Russia and creates a bunch of problems, creates hatred, which most importantly generates hatred. And because of this hatred, our society is in such a state when we are ready to quarrel with a new country once a week, practically start some fighting with neighbors and not with neighbors, and all this happens due to the generation of hatred. And all this goes through state propaganda, state media, and not only state, and this is all bad, and we must oppose it. Regarding how I will take part in the procession, I, like everyone else, will come to the Novopushkinsky square, we will get to the place of murder, we will lay flowers ... We talked with the organizing committee, there are some internal consumptions among the participants in this procession, some unnecessary quarrels and internal analysis, which things should be discussed on this day, which is not worth it. It seems to me that it is necessary to forget at least one day about these straightforces and to say that the main thing that we are going on on this day is the confrontation of fascism, hatred and xenophobia. And it doesn’t matter who, how to look at the problems of feminism, LGBT and everything else, does not need to quarrel about this.
Elena Fanailova: Have you prepared any special slogans for this day?
Artem Loskutov: slogans - no. These will be posters with pictures, with symbols. Some banners will also be made, but I do not do slogans. My main picture is a crossed out of place. This is the main symbol that will unite, I think, people who are ready to go out on this day, and liberals, socialists, and anarchists ... They are all different, and for some reason they will quarrel, some of them are radical, but it seems to me that we must stop quarreling and starting to unite, at least on this day. A crossed TV as a symbol of a source of hatred. And the crossed out a bomb is a protest against militarism, in which our All -Russian hatred is manifested today.
Elena Fanailova: And I will ask you to show us a fragment from St. Petersburg - about the work of the workshop of an anti -fascist poster, which is led by Kolya Oleinikov. They are also preparing, despite the fact that we do not know whether they will come out or not.
Nikolai Oleinikov: Today, interesting people, activists of different organizations who see their agenda, including anti -fascist ones, gathered in the ROSE DC. These are radical socialists and anarchists ... That is, today, and on January 19, it is a day when people who have any theoretical disagreements in what liberation is, what it can be, and how to carry it out these days, on this day, on January 19, on the memory of Stas Markelov and Nastya Baburova, they are united in general anti-fascist action.
Elena Fanailova: So Loskutov and Kolya spoke of the disagreements that they urge to overcome. Oleg, you know about disagreements, for example, among Ukrainian antifa, they are also preparing to come out.
Oleg Zhuravlev: On January 19, not such a large -scale protest day in Ukraine, as in Russia, nevertheless, traditionally the left always went to the procession, for them it was also a common reason to forget about disagreements. As far as I know, there are now discussions in which composition to go out who will go with whom, there are disagreements between anarchists and socialists, between those who occupy a rather wire and rather anti -war position. But I really hope that for Ukrainians this day is also, this memory will still become a mechanism for overcoming disagreements, and they will come out together. Although, perhaps, this will not happen.
Elena Fanailova: And what is the subject of disagreements with us?
Vlad Tupikin: It seems to me that there are generally disagreements and their long chewing inside any social movement, it doesn’t matter here, left or liberal, any political platform-this is an indicator that the reaction period has most likely already occurred. That is, either there is no clear understanding of what needs to be done, or there is an understanding of what needs to be done, but there is no strength to do it. For example, important activists are in prisons and emigration. For example, there is no access to mass media. It is clear that a couple of newspapers with a not very large circulation to the country, a couple of radio stations that broadcast only on the Internet, and so on, in fact, a complete absence of a regional broadcasting network. In general, during the reaction period there is always something to talk with, with whom to split, and this law is in force for a long time, and in the history of our country it is known that the Bolshevik party has never been redeemed, which later successfully came to power, as between the accelerations of the Duma in 1907 and the outbreak of the First World War. These were the most gloomy years for Bolshevism, many people left the party, and the party itself turned into a very conditional organization. Nevertheless, all this was overcome when the front of work appeared. No one recalled disagreements in the winter of 2011-12, although they were. Someone even tried to call to change the course of the public movement, maybe, but everyone felt a common wave, and everyone poured into it. And you were either on the wave or on the sidelines, watched it. There is nothing like this now. It seems that we have an anti -fascist movement, but it is devoid of language, devoid of mass support, is deprived of the opportunity to bring its point of view to the country's population. And of course, it is necessary to bring her after such things as the murder of a child in St. Petersburg. When they tell us that he died himself, it seems to me that none of sane people doubt that this is an actual murder. Now everyone says that everything is bad, but we are still alive, we live in our country, meet in Moscow, we can still arrange demonstrations in Moscow, we can still discuss our problems on the radio, which means not everything is lost yet. And in general, it seems to me that in our country many are spontaneous anti -fascists, and the people sees the truth. Do not be pessimists. As a rule, customers of music, hatred are quite marginal elements, and just if they give a word for several years in a row in all media, then yes, it may seem that the apocalypse occurs.
I don't know. But he will appear.
And so on.
