In Chisinau, protesters broke into the parliament building . They oppose the fact that deputies approved Pavel Filip as Prime Minister of Moldova and demand early elections.

The vote on Philip's candidacy took place on January 20. The representative from the ruling Democratic Party was supported by 57 deputies. In total, 101 people sit in parliament.

Filip’s appointment was opposed by Igor Dodon’s socialist faction, deputies from the Communist Party of Vladimir Voronin, and a number of liberal democrats.

Protesters gathered outside the parliament building even before the meeting of deputies began. They chanted “We want to go to parliament!” and demanded early elections.

As the Associated Press notes , Pavel Filip is a pro-Western politician. The pro-Russian opposition is protesting against his appointment.

• The previous government was dismissed in October 2015 after it was revealed that more than a billion dollars had been siphoned out of the country. The Prosecutor General's Office believes that Vladimir Filat, who was Prime Minister until 2013, is involved in this crime. One of the leaders of the civil platform “Dignity and Truth” (protest organizer), Valentin Dolganyuk, told Meduza that Filat, although he resigned as prime minister in 2013, actually remained in power until recently. He is now under arrest.
