On this joint project, photographers Denis Tarasov and Fedor Telekov worked for four years. They collected material for him in the Sverdlovsk region of the Russian Federation - there are 24 colonies of all types, except for the children's colony for girls. Of these, five colonies with nine thousand convicts - in Nizhny Tagil.

To hear the voice of the convicts, they asked in colonies where there are educational institutions, to write an essay on the topic "What is a prison?" - Some of them also entered the project. There were prisoners who did not want to act - no one forced them. From all the others they took a receipt of consent to shoot - the receipts were later filed into affairs.

“We were in the women's colony several times,” Denis Tarasov told NT. - For the first time, the prisoners were not very willing to star. But when the photos were handed over to them, the next time the line was already lined up. Their life is monotonous and boring, any movement from the outside is always of interest. ”

Those who are sitting for life are constantly in a chamber one and a half meters for one and a half - only go for a walk in a small nook. “Do you know how they have fun? - says Denis. -They find out that somewhere a crime was committed, and they take it to themselves: then they are taken to the crime scene. They carry out investigative measures, in short, a whole journey ... But they don’t care-they still won’t give them a long time than they are. ”
