Dmitry Zubarev is the author of publications on the figures of literature and art of Russia of the first third of the 20th century, a senior researcher at the NIPC "Memorial". The study “Prince and Leader” (2015) is based on Dmitry Zubarev’s finds: annotated bibliography of Lenin foreign obetitus, performed by Boris Pasternak and was considered unrelated for 90 years, and five articles (“psychosociological essays”) “Lenin and Russia” published in 1924 by an outstanding philologist and literary Critician Prince Dmitry Svyatommyrsky in the Hanoi newspaper, also remained unknown. In 1932, Svyatopolkmir returned to his homeland, and seven years later died in a Gulag.

February 25 - opening of the exhibition "Live or write. Varlam Shalamov "

The memorial opens a large -scale exhibition dedicated to Varlam Shalamov - the first project representing the fate of the writer in the exposition space so detailed and multifaceted.

The authors of the exhibition, German curators Christina Linx and Wilfried F. Schöller, worked on her for several years in close cooperation with Russian museums and archives. Unique materials were collected - official and personal documents, letters, photographs from the collections of the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the State Literary Museum, the International Memorial, the Memorial Museum of Varlam Shalamov in Vologda and other meetings. The manuscripts of Shalamov, photographs and other sources, telling about the events of his life, appear surrounded by materials that recreat the writer’s camp experience, the main features of which metaphorically beat the thoughtful architectural solution of the exhibition.

Varlam Shalamov is the author of the most powerful literary certificate of camps of the Stalinist Gulag. His “Kolyma stories” fit into a series of the most famous works that have become a humanistic response to the events of the 20th century, marked by the collapse of the values ​​of civilization. Shalamov considered the Stalin and Hitler camps to the phenomena of the same order. They cannot be identified, but it is necessary to compare and denote the prospect of such a comparison. Therefore, the texts of Varlam Shalamov should be interpreted on a par with the works of authors such as Jorge Semprun, Primo Levy, Imre Certes, Jean America with their testimonies of the camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald.

It is no coincidence that the name of the exhibition is echoing with the title of the book by Jorge Semprun “Write or Live”, which was a supporter of the unequivocal and decisive condemnation of Stalinism following the condemnation of nationalsocialism and fascism. According to him, only such a “double memory”, comprehending the essence of both dictatorships, would be able to rally Europe, which survived the horrors of the twentieth century. The writer turned his call to the cultural fixation of this “double memory” primarily to the Germans, the people who survived the dominance of both totalitarian regimes. The project "Live or write. Barlam Shalamov ”is largely a response to this call.

The exhibition was first presented in September 2013 at the Literature House in Berlin, its opening was timed to the release of the collected works of Shalamov in German. Since then, her shows with great success were held in several cities of Germany and Italy, as well as in Prague, Luxembourg and Basel.

Exhibition "Live or write. Varlam Shalamov ”will last until February 1, 2017 .
