The ceremonies are held on the occasion of the old holiday of Setsubun, which marks the victory of good over the forces of evil in connection with the first signs of the awakening of nature at the end of winter. A little less large -scale events are held today almost throughout Japan - in public centers, schools and just on the streets of cities.

During the ceremony, thousands of kilograms of fried soybeans are thrown into the participants with laughter. They are fired by imaginary or quite real devils with tails and horns depict artists or just volunteers in medieval suits and terrible masks. Sometimes dogs adorned with attributes of evil spirits act as devils.

You can just throw a handful of beans to the street from the porch of your home and shout out the magic formula: "Happiness in the house, devils - out!" It is believed that at the same time the unclean force will inevitably turn into a shameful flight.
