Scientists recorded gravitational waves. Albert Einstein also predicted them, but experimentally the existence of waves proved only now. This was announced at a press conference in Washington.
The source of waves that managed to fix was the merger of two black holes in a billion light years from the ground. The waves were recorded in both observatories that participated in the study.

The following happened. 1.2 billion years ago in a distant galaxy two black holes revolved around each other. The mass of a larger black hole was like 36 suns, the mass is smaller - as 29 suns. Over time, the holes came closer and accelerated and eventually merged into one huge black hole. At this moment, gravitational waves began to spread in all directions with the speed of light. But gradually they faded, and by the time of approaching the ground they faded so much that it was already difficult to distinguish from other vibrations on the planet (like noise or seismactivity). In order to catch gravitational waves, two observatories were built at a distance of about three thousand kilometers from each other. In shape, they are the letter L, in which both shoulders are equal. The length of the shoulder is four kilometers. At the ends of the shoulders, ideal mirrors are installed, which are isolated from fluctuations. When the waves pass through the shoulders, their length changes less than the proton. Nevertheless, the equipment is so sensitive that this change was also caught.
