The Prosecutor General of Ukraine resigned

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin has resigned. This was reported by Ukrayinska Pravda, citing a source in the Prosecutor General's Office. The deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, journalist Mustafa Nayem also announced the resignation of Shokin.

• On February 16, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko addressed Viktor Shokin with a proposal to resign. According to him, Shokin carried out a number of necessary reforms in the prosecutor's office, but it failed to win the trust of the public.
• Viktor Shokin has served as Prosecutor General of Ukraine since February 2015. He was repeatedly accused of insufficiently fighting corruption, as well as of dragging out the investigation into the murders on the Maidan. Shokin was also required to promptly investigate the crimes committed by officials under President Viktor Yanukovych.
• In mid-2015, a conflict arose in the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine in connection with the detention of two employees of the department, who were found to have large sums of money and precious stones (the so-called “diamond prosecutors” case). Investigations were launched against the participants in the operation to detain suspects in connection with procedural violations.
