Mikhail Goreva - On the filming of the film Spielberg "Spy Bridge"
Six nominations for the Oscar Award, including for the best film. The American film academy, at least, noticed the picture of Stephen Spielberg "Spy Bridge". But in Russia this film was not so noticeable. Although, according to Mikhail Gorevoy, the actor of the role of KGB officer Ivan Shishkin, this film should be watched not only because it is made respect for the Russians, but also because the topics raised in it are extremely relevant.
- In general, this scenario is amazing in relation to us, Russian. I immediately said this to Stevens. While the camera was tuned in, we walked back and forth along the Spy Bridge, along the very Bridge Glnik with Mark Raylens and Stephen Spielberg. They just chatted about anything. And then Mark says: "Listen, Stephen, here Michael says, he is joyful that in your film Russians are represented by worthy opponents." I say: "Yes, it’s very joyful for me that the Russians in this script are not any caricature fools, drunkards and freaks, but very worthy rivals." In general, I must say that in the movie "Spy Bridge" the main role, of course, has Tom Hanks. But the main character of the picture is the Soviet intelligence officer Abel. This is he is a hero, he is a persistent man. A man of small stature, middle -aged becomes an incredible scale of a person. And his opponent Powers is a weakness and a traitor. So this is a very patriotic Russian cinema made by American director Stephen Spielberg.

0:00 0:11:20- Your hero is Shishkin, in the script he was exactly the way you play it? Or did you have to add something of your own?
The main character of the picture is the Soviet intelligence officer Abel. This is he is a hero, he is a persistent man. This is a very patriotic Russian cinema made by American director Stephen Spielberg
“Steve Spielberg and I gave birth to him.” When they brought me to get acquainted with him and introduced me, he turned and said: "Michael, hello! Friend, how to get it?!" It seems that he was waiting for me all day. At that moment, there was a rearrangement on the site, we had time to talk. Spielberg talked about himself, and at the same time it was clear what he was thinking about my character. Of course, he took me away, approved this role, but I came alive, not on the video, and he already works immediately. He looks at me and talks about the fact that his family was from under Odessa, from a small Jewish place. He takes off his glasses, looks at my nose and says: "I want ... make-up artists, make-up artists, come to me. I want to have a lot of small blue-red veins here. As on the faces of drinking people." Then, for 1.5 hours, these veins were drawn to me ... They are practically not visible, on the one hand. But on the other hand, this gives an incredibly useful feeling for building an image. I do not sit down, do not grimen ... Shishkin will be like that. This is a real character, the war has just ended, he fought ... And this is how this hero was born, this character.
- What task Spielberg set before you? Because your hero is antipathetic on the screen, but nevertheless he does not cause any animal rejection.
- Antipathic? But I was hoping that it was not very antipathetic. He is intelligent. Yes, my Shishkin defends the interests of his country in the same way as Donovan. When we discussed this with Stephen, we immediately said that it should be a semantic skirmish. After all, this picture has a lot of meanings, so necessary for us now. It is in our scenes with Tom Hanks that themes, remarks arise, which are exactly about our time. When a lawyer Donovan tells Shishkin: "You understand that the next mistake that our countries, the governments of our countries can make, may be the last mistake in the world." Look out the window - is it wrong right now?! Only much worse, much more cynical, worse and more dangerous than then. When Donovan asks Abel, will he be in danger when he returned to Russia? And my character, Kagebeshny, says: "Well, judging by how things are now, we are all in danger." And what now, isn't it? Is it not in danger of everything, the whole world? Spielberg is a genius director, but of all his films it is the Spy Bridge that is relevant today. He is relevant to death!
-And why, in your opinion, right now, Spielberg drew attention to this story, the story of Abel and Powers? After all, it did not happen today, not yesterday.
- This is better, of course, to ask him personally. But from what he told me, I know that this story concerns him personally, his childhood. There is a moment in the film where the boy pours full buckets and a bath of water, plugs with a cork and does not give her sister to wash, because when the Russians begin to bomb, the first thing is to turn off the electricity and there will be no water. This is a story about him. It was he who was the same boy. It was Stephen Spielberg that filled the bath with water because he was afraid that the Russians would bomb. This is his story. It also concerns his attitude to parents ... For example, in the script there is a scene that is not in the film, this scene is again from his life, from his father’s life. By the way, his dad is still alive and well. So, when Powers was caught, a presentation was arranged on the Red Square at the mausoleum - and his helmet and suit were arranged. That is, it was a propaganda event dedicated to how vile Americans of our Soviet Union dream of strangling. And Stephen's father was just in Moscow for some matters and stood in this line with his American colleague. They were quickly calculated by our valiant Chekists that these were some imported rolls, checked the documents, saw an American passport, pulled them out of the line and led them. Stephen said that his father realized that everything, the end of his life, Siberia, remove snow. They brought him to the beginning of the line, where the officer stood, who presented all these slaves of Powers, arranged a show for the people. He said: "Here, Americans, see what you are doing!" But then Spielberg Sr. and his colleague, but he survived a lot of exciting minutes, which Stephen told me just. So this is his personal story. He did not decide to shoot this film yesterday, for ten years he rushed with him. And now he waited in the wings and very on time. Again, a genius, feels time, catches the hints of the sky and reacts.
- An amazing thing, but in this film there are a lot of exact details and there is no what is called the hanging cranberry, which Hollywood paintings sometimes sin. In your opinion, where does such attention from the material, to the details? This is not only the memories of Spielberg's father.
Spielberg is a brilliant director, but of all his films it is the Spy Bridge that is currently relevant
-I have to act in foreign cinema, and in different ways, not only in such a mighty one as James Bond or Stephen Spielberg, but in some Air Force, at different sites, of a different scale. They constantly ask me - what is the difference between shooting here in Russia, and shooting there? Different. And one of the great differences is the level of training. They spend so much time, effort, attention, talent, nerves. They are dug up to the very essence of the subject.
- I know that in the film there is a text that you came up with for your hero and for Abel. Tell this story.
-In the script it was written that they meet on the bridge, that Shishkin is shouting with Abel about something in Russian. And about what is not written. But there are no replicas. And before that, they give an officer who should identify Powers - a real Powers or Russian linden. To which Abel says: "Interesting, curious, who will they send me to identify me? I left for so long from there, no one knows me." And in the script there was no answer to this question. And the day before the filming, in the evening I think, what Shishkin and Abel are about? How do Abel identify? And so I wrinkled for a while, and suddenly - op: "Remove the hat. Does your wife have a birthmark?" - "Yes!" - screams Abel. "Where?" - "Right chest." I knew that it should be short remarks in Russian for Raylens. We rehearsed this for a long time. I do not know if there was a birthmark on the chest of Abel. But I came up with these remarks. And when Mark Reilance told Stephen about this, he was just delighted.
-You play a role in English in the film, and in the Russian version you duplicate your own hero. Is it possible to say that you played the role of Shishkin twice in two languages?
- It is very good that I myself voice my role. Do I need to fulfill the new one? I just know better than anyone else that all this is about. Knowledge is not in the head, it is in the whole body - in the spirit, in the body ... This is communication with a partner, with a director, with a brilliant operator Janusz Kaminsky.
-Was it easier for you to pronounce this text in Russian or in English?
- It’s more convenient for me, easier and better to play and work in Russian. Because no matter how well you know English, you still cannot dive so deeply inside. Because all the same, the languages are different, and different ... All the same, we are different. We watched different cartoons. We had different childhood. Language. The most important word that the human ego expresses. In Russian, I can pull it. It is huge, like Russia. I can yapk for two days. And in English I (ay) - on the contrary, he took and rested on the wall. Ay - and that’s it. You see, what am I saying that? The structure of the language dictates existence, dictates breathing. Not literal breathing with his nose, but the breath of the character of the character. You understand what I'm talking about, right? Here. Therefore, of course, I know the language tolerably, and I feel quite comfortable, but still, of course, in my native language it is loved.
- It is clear that Spielberg relates to those directors who sees what the picture will be at the exit when he only sits in writing the script. How much that you saw on the screen corresponded to your expectations?
- My situation was even much more interesting than you imagined. We shot in Berlin, and I came there twice. On the first visit, we shot interior scenes, and the second visit - it was shooting on the bridge, and when I arrived for the second time, Stephen met me and said: “Old man, I rarely praise my artists, but I will tell you - this is my best praise that I have: you will like it in my film,” Stephen Spilberg told me. And, of course, I was waiting for this. I knew that it would be cool. Is this cooler than I expected? And I did not assume, I waited. I waited, especially after these words of Stephen. And I was not deceived.
- Are you satisfied with how the picture was held in Russia?
- No. I'm not satisfied. Firstly, I was surprised why the premiere of this film took place in the cinema "Pioneer". He is gorgeous, but he is small. There are two halls of 80 seats. To which the organizers told me: "Well, this is an art house." I say: "How is it?!" -"Art House." “Spielberg-art house?! Are you guys?! I am convinced that attention to this film should be even more because it is the most relevant, this film. Look-we quarreled with everyone. We have no friends except the army and navy, once again. And this is terrible! After all, people have found strength, courage, in the 60s, so that there are no disasters. And now? The premieres, Spielberg’s dinner told me: “Yes, I would be curious to find out if Putin watches this film, what would he say now?” I understand what he was talking about - about the present, about the pressing, “Stephen, I can guarantee you, I give you 100 percent, I will give you a certain. Because Abel for any Soviet intelligence officer is just an icon. I don’t know what Putin will say. But if he calls, he decides to tell me something, I’ll tell you right away. "This is interesting. And it’s interesting, probably from the point of view of relevance, today's topic. Every day, the whole spring is compressed and compressed, worse and worse, worse and worse. Thanks to the beautiful company of the American Henx, the Englishman Raylens and other artists, under the leadership of Spielberg, I shouted about this in the film in the film in the film "Spy Bridge".
