Hackers withdrew 677 million rubles from Metallinvestbank accounts
More than 677 million rubles (over $9 million) were withdrawn from the accounts of Metallinvestbank, and a hacker attack is suspected at the bank. This was reported to RIA Novosti by a source in law enforcement agencies.
All money was withdrawn in the last days of February. The administration of Metallinvestbank turned to the police.
The press service of the Moscow police confirmed that recently a theft of funds occurred in one of the capital's banks (the department refused to specify the name of the credit institution). Upon the withdrawal of money, a criminal case was initiated under the article "theft".
Later, on March 5, Metallinvestbank clarified that part of the stolen funds was returned with the help of banks where the funds were withdrawn. As a result, Metallinvestbank lost 200 million rubles from the actions of hackers. The bank emphasized that the volume of losses is less than one percent of the bank's assets.
“Presumably, unknown people were able to hack into the system of remote access to the banking system, with the help of which they then carried out operations to transfer funds to several controlled accounts issued to individuals, from where accruals can be cashed out,” a law enforcement source told RIA Novosti.
