2006 Death of Slobodan Milosevic

Ten years ago, on March 11, 2006, former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic died of a heart attack in the prison of the Hague Tribunal. He was on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the massacre of Muslims in Srebrenica and the genocide of Albanians in Kosovo. The government of Serbia and Montenegro refused to bury the former president with state honors. Foreign Minister Vuk Drašković said: "Turning a serial killer into a national hero would be a disgrace to Serbia, making it a country in which crime is the highest virtue."
