Currently, the temporarily acting commander in chief of the Navy is the commander of the Northern Fleet Admiral Vladimir Korolev. According to the source, it is he who will soon be appointed head of the Navy instead of Chirkov.

In January, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Vice Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov, said that Chirkov "underwent a small operation." Then, according to him, by order of the Minister of Defense, the acting commander in chief of the Navy was appointed Korolev, "as the most experienced and competent" admiral in the Navy.

Chirkov was appointed head of the Navy in May 2012 by decree of the then President Dmitry Medvedev, replacing Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky.
