The case against Karpyuk and Klykh is being considered in the Supreme Court of the Chechen Republic, they are accused of murder and attempted murder of "persons in connection with the performance of their official duty" under the articles of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR, which was in force until 1997 (under paragraphs "c, h, n ”Article 102 and part 2 of article 15, paragraphs “c, h, n” of article 102 of the RSFSR Criminal Code), as well as in leadership and participation in a gang (under parts 1 and 2 of article 209 of the current Criminal Code).

According to investigators, Mykola Karpyuk and Stanislav Klykh were members of the extremist organization Ukrainian National Assembly - Ukrainian People's Self-Defense (UNA-UNSO) and in late 1994 - early 1995 fought with Russian troops in Grozny as part of the armed formations of the self-proclaimed Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
