C'est la vie. Step to the side.
Non -periodic conversations with Andrei Gavrilov
Ivan Tolstoy: We, preparing for today's record, decided to give our program subtitle - “Step to the side”. In the course of our story, we will explain what is meant. Let's start with the main musical topic. Where is the “step aside”?
Andrei Gavrilov: It will be very funny, because just with regard to the music that I want to imagine today, we can say that there is no step aside, in general, and not. This is an absolute jazz Maine-Stme, modern jazz, which is not a departure back, it is not Dixyland and not New Orleans jazz, this is not a new jazz and not an avant-garde that I often try to promote, because it seems to me that this is the future. Here the step towards the other. That in our time, when we, not noticing, were witnesses to dying, killing a physical bearer of music ... Remember, there were records, then long-playing records, then cassettes, then compact disks, then a unit of all this (DVD-disk of sound), and suddenly the whole world was faced with the fact that the music was somehow preserved, thank God, and that they recorded it. The modern generation listens to the music of virtual, downloading files from the Internet, which I did not like it, it is immediately erased, something else is written to this place. That is, the music ceased to connect in the minds of people with a plate, with a disk or a cassette, with something that can be taken and put on a shelf. And in this situation, from my point of view, absolutely unnatural (I, as a lover of discs and compact disks, I believe that this is a deadlock path), firms are still preserved and, moreover, new firms appear that make music on audio carriers. One of these firms is a Moscow company called "Butman Music." Butman is Igor Butman, a wonderful Moscow saxophonist. In the course of business, I will talk about both the company and its releases in today's program, I can only say that about seven years ago Igor Butman, which was organizing concerts, tour, jazz festivals, decided to publish compact disks with the recordings of musicians-those that he invites him to play in clubs. And if in 2009 this desire was natural, then to preserve this practice until 2016, when the disk becomes more likely, souvenir products than a necessity, in my opinion, this is a heroic act. This is about this company "Butman Music" and about its releases I would like to talk. But, in order not to speak for a long time, let's immediately listen to one of the records. A fragment of the CD, recorded by the pianist Evgeny Lebedev and smuggler Anton Revolutionaries with the help of his comrades, with the help of other musicians, which is called “open strings”. I will talk about musicians a little later, but for now - a fragment of their composition, which is called the "sea".

Andrei Gavrilov: Igor Butman is known here not only as a wonderful musician (by the way, one of the Bill Clinton’s favorite musicians), but also as the organizer of the Triumph Jazz festival, which was triumphantly in some cities of Russia, and as the organizer and head of the Butman Music publishing company, which issues compact disks with the recordings Invites to festivals, invites to speak in his clubs, with whom he often performs himself. Since his festival is one of the largest international jazz events of our country, it is enough to say that over the 16 years that the festival has been held, such world stars have played there (I don’t specifically call our musicians now, ours were there) as Bill Evans, McCoy Tiener, Di Bridgeoter, Gary Burton, Lee Knitz ... Many of these musicians later appear in compact Disks, in the compact Disks. Recorded programs of those musicians that the Butman Music company produces on their audio carriers. Recently, the company, like very many, is trying to enter the seemingly temporarily and slightly reviving market for long-playing vinyl records, so some programs enter the compact disks and on the black large giants with a hole in the middle of the generation of black giants-what was called earlier Long Players. Now this is also called Long Pleani, but I'm not sure that this is always the name is clear, especially since the CD sounds much longer, it is more than the long-flavor than the 33-turn records so familiar to us. Releasing a variety of musicians, of course, Igor Butman does not forget about his own music, about his teams. He has a quartet, a quintet, and a large Big-band, maybe one of the best in the country now. And with this, the Big Bend, he recorded a program called "Moscow at 3 a.m.". And let's listen to a fragment of this program, a composition called “That's All” - “That's all.”

Ivan Tolstoy: The theme of our program is a step aside. Andrei has in mind the release of records in their physical embodiment, and not just some kind of musical step aside, really Andrei?
Andrey Gavrilov: Yes, you know, there is one very strange thing, I noticed it. When a crisis occurs (recall 1998, let's see what is happening now), it is a little easier to survive firms that occupy a very small niche on the market. For example, lovers of CDs with bird voice records. There are 50 people in some country or city, so they will continue to buy these discs. There are lovers of a super vanguard. Suppose there are not 50 people, but 400 or 500, they will continue to buy their favorite music.
Fans of poppies, love-carrots and all that kind, they immediately stop buying records or CDs as soon as the economic situation becomes more intense.
The company "Butman Music" is located somewhere in the middle. On the one hand, there are not so many lovers of jazz to classify them to pop. This, on the contrary, is a true audience, which so far can buy CDs. On the other hand, this is not the avant -garde that several stubborn lovers of this music will certainly buy, rather, more popular music, it is not for nothing that it is called mainstream, that is, the music of the main direction. And, as such, she loses in percentage the number of those listeners who, it seems, cannot live without this music. This balancing is always very dangerous. I am glad, to be honest, that the “Butman Music” is still preserved in the market, that they manage to somehow make ends meet. I do not know their accounting at all, but I really hope that they are based on a general calculation, that the profit from concerts and festivals helps to survive compact discs, on the contrary, the CDs are successfully sold and help to survive with touring undertakings. Be that as it may, the company exists, has already released more than 15 albums. It is bad for me, as for the consumer, that not all albums can be found on the site. The company's website is behind. For example, an album that struck me as an idea at first, and then seemed very interesting already as a performance of an idea, but which is not on the site. I hope it will be. An album called Yesenin Jazz. Recently, experiments of combination of jazz music and Soviet classical poetry are increasingly appearing. You can recall the large program of Alexei Kruglov dedicated to Mayakovsky. But Yesenin in Jazz, in my opinion, I have not met before. Therefore, when I saw a disk called Yesenin Jazz, and its authors “Feelin's” and Boris Swelldley, of course, rushed to listen to him. Gennady Filin and his Feelin's ensemble - from Ryazan, from the Yesenin places themselves. The Italian singer Boris Swelllei is well familiar to us, because he has come here on tour more than once, and even recording earlier with some of our musicians, I don’t remember exactly, because his discs reach here in a very strange way, some in stores, some are not at all. But, be that as it may, they recorded together the program from which I suggest you listen to the fragment.

Ivan Tolstoy: Andrei, and all musical publishers in the world are in the same, this position described by you, that is, not at the top of the hill, even if you take into account that not only a fool sits on the top of the hill?
Andrei Gavrilov: I would say that all publishers are not only not on the top of the hill, but rather at the bottom of the pit. Because there was a difficult transition from vinyl records to CDs. Not in terms of production, it was just the simplest, but in terms of the entire infrastructure, all that helps to convey music to the listener. But there, at least, those who were oriented in time, I mean the publishers who managed to quickly rebuild, they were able to survive because, in the end, that selling CDs, that selling plates is more difficult, the other is easier, but, in general, the system does not change. Now, when there is no carrier, but still the vast majority of music consumers on the Internet prefers not to pay for it (natural human desire), this all leads to the fact that the companies that produce records have less working capital for the records of these musicians. It is good if the musician comes with a ready -made phonogram - let's publish me, so I'm so good. Remember the Beatles, they could afford to sit in the studio for six months, come every day, do something there, play, put a fool, and then from this an album “Let it be” appears. To imagine that now, when there is no income from the sale of records and CDs, someone can afford this, if, of course, not his private studio, this is simply impossible. Why am I saying that the situation seems to me deadlock. Not because I feel sorry for the ruined publishers, but because from all this musical industry, those means that allowed to record new music used to be recorded. It turns out that instead of killing a bloodsucker-intermediary, we kill a musician who does not have money to sign up. Good Barda - he took the guitar, agreed at the studio. This is a little money. And what to do to a symphonic orchestra? Not even symphonic, but just a small team of 5-8 musicians? This is much more complicated. And that’s why I say that the existence of such firms, the existence of the company “Butman Music” is one of the steps towards which I have such great hopes.
Ivan Tolstoy: That is, you want to say that the idea of a revived philanthropy can contribute to maintaining, holding from the sliding of the whole field of art?
Andrei Gavrilov: No, I do not think that there will be patrons who will support this business. Take jazz so as not to make too large throwing to the side. I think there will be patrons who will support their same direction - violin in jazz, gangjo in jazz or African folk instruments and saxophones. There will be patrons that will support some modern directions simply because contemporary art always arouses interest. Oddly enough, I’m more afraid now for the fate of more traditional forms of music, which seem to feel good in public consciousness, they play that everyone is already listening. What to worry about them? I understand a young man who is trying to do something original, which was not there before, we will support him, we will help him. Here is the course of thoughts. And it turns out that this music, which, in particular, publishes “Butman Music”, it can fail in public consciousness, like sand to seep between the fingers. God forbid that this does not happen. “Butman Music” is not the only company that is engaged in such Mainstrov’s music in Moscow there are others, we talked about the Artbit firm, for example, everyone survives, God forbid, so that they remain as long as possible. For all my love for the vanguard, I understand that the avant -garde cannot exist, if there is no one in relation to what he is an avant -garde. So the situation now, in my opinion, is quite tense.
Ivan Tolstoy: And the fundraising, the collection of funds from the audience, on Yandex-wallet, how Boris Grebenshchikov published his last album, or what else, or is it still the lot of those who are already promoted or already famous?
Andrei Gavrilov: I think that one danger lurks here, which no one thinks about. The fact is that we turn lovers of music and fans of a particular musician or team in absolute dictators. Imagine that the same Boris Grebenshchikov says that he needs to invite a symphony orchestra from Papua New Guinea to record the next album. Imagine how many people, having learned what amount is needed for this, will say: well, all this is good, but why is Papua New Guinea? And what is the worse Indonesia? It is closer a little and the flight is cheaper. Or let's take better a glorious Czech Symphony Orchestra, which all these compact disks are cheap around the world - “Give your beloved Vivaldi.” As a rule, they write Slovak, Bulgarian or Czech orchestras. So for some reason it happened. Probably because they are not very expensive for their services. Let's write down with them. Are they so worse? So I can compare Vasya Petrov and Vasya Ivanov, and to me - that the one that is what is sounded the same. That is, the dictatorship of the producer from whom the musicians are trying to escape can turn into a dictate of the public. And if he says that I now want to record an experimental thing, I will have a thermen there. For us, we will say, the people will say, “we need something else.” You have an electric guitar, connected it and - the buzz! "Train in the fire" or "old Kozlodoev." I hope that this will never happen to Grebenshchikov. This is the answer to the fact that fundraising and similar things are good, and probably there is something in them that will remain in the future.
But there is a difference. You come and subscribe, remember that we had a “Library of the Light” - the collected works that were published by the “light”. You came and watched: Conan Doyle, Leonid Leonov, Pelevin and Dombrovsky are published. You don’t have all the money for all money, you don’t need everything, but you choose what exactly you need, you know about what will happen there. And you subscribe to the magazine "Spark". But you do not know what will happen there, and you cannot change anything here. Imagine that you could change. I will subscribe to the magazine "Spark", let it go out, but only that there is more feuilletons, smaller horoscopes, more detectives, smaller love stories. That's what the fundraising can turn into, from my point of view, and, in my opinion, this is terrible.
Ivan Tolstoy: It will be a dramatic step aside.
Andrey Gavrilov: This, on the contrary, is a step forward, three steps back.
Ivan Tolstoy: I suggest, Andrey, to be distracted for some time from music and take a step towards literature. More precisely, the history of literature. Double anniversary falls these days. 150 years to a loud socio-literary event and 90 years to describe this event. Both that and the other happened in the spring.
On March 20, 1926, Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky marked his “preface” to the collection “Nekrasov: Articles and Materials” issued by the Leningrad publishing house “Cubuch” (the Commission for Improving the life of scientists). This collection quickly became a bibliographic rarity, and the articles from it with each reprint began to be modified in accordance with censorship requirements. As a result, by the beginning of the 50s, light, sarcastic, fast and incredibly talented essays of Korney Ivanovich turned into a dull volume written in a completely different narrative pace. The brick was called the Stalin era - “Nekrasov’s skill” - and for years has not been sold out in Bukinistic stores.
But before we turn to the features of the collection of the 26th year, we recall what happened 150 years ago, and for this we will read the beginning of the first article by the Chukovsky “Poet and the Executioner”.
“Poet and executioner.
Whenever we are talking about the sins and vices of Nekrasov, they first recall the notorious laudatory ode, which he read the muravian-lover at a dinner in the English club on April 16, 1866.
It is argued that the duplicity of Nekrasov did not affect anything with such an obviously as in this monstrous clothing.
In fact, how could the revolutionary poet praise the bloody pacifier of Poland and encourage him to new villains? Why a person whose one name inspired freedom fighters, who, it seems, only did what he repeated to the youth: “Go to the fire ...”, “Go and Patter ...”, “It will not be for nothing: it’s firmly when blood flowing under it ...”, “Rush straight into the flame and die,” why did he really throw it into the flame? And it was he who betrayed her, for (as the newspapers reported at the same time), he himself publicly asked Muravyov to strengthen the terror, called him to new executions. The youth said "go and the Pertini", and Muravyov "go and destroy."
"Your Excellency, do not spare the perpetrators!" - He repeated the trouser and so persistently demanded punishment for those whom he himself seduced on revolutionary exploits, that even gendarmes were outraged.
“The scoundrel, harmful Jesuit,” the gendarme said about us. “Because of him, so many people are sitting in the casemates, and he rides in strollers, as if nothing had happened.”
The revolutionaries cursed him. One of the exiles, only accidentally slipping away from the Muravyovsky gallows, wrote many years later:
No.
Anna Akhmatova. I love.
Alexander Blok. Yes.
Andrey Bely. Yes.
Maxim Gorky.
Nikolai Gumilyov. Yes. Very!
Not particularly.
Vladimir Mayakovsky. Don't know.
Yes.
Nikolai Tikhonov.
Not particularly.
Anna Akhmatova.
Alexander Blok. I love.
Maxim Gorky. д.
Nikolai Gumilyov.
Vyacheslav Ivanov.
Don't know.
Vladimir Mayakovsky.
Nikolai Tikhonov.
Anna Akhmatova. No.
Alexander Blok. No.
Andrey Bely. No.
Now.
Nikolai Gumilyov.
Maxim Gorky. No, it was not.
Vyacheslav Ivanov. Never.
Never.
Vladimir Mayakovsky.
Nikolai Tikhonov.
Anna Akhmatova.
Alexander Blok.
Maxim Gorky.
Nikolai Gumilyov.
Vyacheslav Ivanov.
Vladimir Mayakovsky.
Nikolai Tikhonov.
