EU called on UN countries to impose sanctions against Russia

The flag of the European Union

The European Union urged the UN countries to follow the EU example and impose sanctions against Russia. The application was published on the Russian -speaking website of the EU Foreign Policy Service on the face of the heads of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of 28 of the European Union and the EEAS head Federica Mogherini.

The document notes that two years after the annexation of Crimea, the European Union is still firmly committed to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"The European Union will continue to adhere to the complete implementation of its non -recognition policy, including through restrictive measures. The EU again calls on the UN member states to consider similar measures by non -recognition in accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly No. 68/262," the document says.

According to the signed by the document of the diplomats, the situation with human rights worsens on the Crimean Peninsula, "including the imposition of the freedom of expressing opinions, the freedom of peaceful assemblies, the freedom of religion and beliefs and the persecution of persons belonging to the minority, in particular the Crimean Tatars."

The document also notes the need for the immediate liberation of Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko, who "must be guaranteed a safe return to Ukraine."

The resolution condemning Crimea to Russia was adopted at a meeting of the UN General Assembly on March 27, 2014. It confirms the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the illegality of the Crimean referendum on joining Russia. The document also calls on all countries and international organizations "refrain from any actions that can be interpreted as a recognition of" the transition of Crimea to Russia.

According to RBC, from those present at a meeting of the General Assembly of delegates, the resolution was supported by representatives of 100 states, another 58 abstained from voting. 11 countries opposed: in addition to Russia, it is also Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, DPRK, Kuba, Nicaragua, Syria and Sudan.

Among those countries who supported the UN resolution, but have not yet imposed sanctions against Russia because of events in Crimea are some countries of Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, as well as Southeast Asia.
