1991 Opening of the III Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR

25 years ago, on March 28, 1991, on the opening day of the III Extraordinary Congress of People's Deputies of the RSFSR, troops were sent to Moscow by order of Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to "protect" the conservative deputies of the Congress from the "moral terror" of the demonstrators. Despite the ban, a massive demonstration in support of Boris Yeltsin took place in Moscow.
