Access to the Capitol, blocked for a short time after one of the visitors opened fire, has been reopened, Reuters reports . According to CNN, access has been partially restored - tourists are still not allowed into the parliament building.

The incident occurred on Monday, March 28, at the Capitol Visitor Center. The visitor, a man, pulled out a gun and started shooting. A Capitol security officer returned fire. One woman was injured. The shooter was also wounded and hospitalized.

According to police, the shooter was a lone shooter and had no accomplices. A Washington administration official told Reuters that there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terrorist attack.

“We believe this is an isolated action... There is no reason to believe this is anything more than a criminal act,” Capitol Police Chief Matthew Verderosa said at a briefing (quoted by CNN).

A CNN source said the attacker tried to get through metal detectors at the entrance to the Capitol Visitor Center. When the magnetometers beeped, he was stopped by security and then pulled out a gun. In response, the guard used a weapon, wounding the man.

The Capitol complex was placed on lockdown for nearly an hour after the incident. Later, access to the building was opened to employees and officials. Tourists are still not allowed into the Capitol.
