French President Francois Hollande has abandoned plans to revoke French citizenship and deport those found guilty of terrorism offences. He said this following a meeting with the heads of both houses of the country’s parliament. At the same time, it was proposed to deprive only dual citizenship holders of French citizenship.

“The compromise (on amendments to the Constitution. - RBC) , apparently, is beyond our reach,” the president said (quoted by BBC ). He added that the measure was blocked by the opposition Republican party, led by Nicolas Sarkozy, The Guardian reports .

The head of state proposed introducing appropriate amendments to the Constitution shortly after a series of terrorist attacks occurred in Paris in November 2015. “This different type of war requires a constitutional regime that would allow [effective] governance in times of crisis,” Hollande said then, speaking to deputies of both houses of parliament at the congress in Versailles, which was convened for the first time since 2009.

Any changes to the French Constitution require the approval of three-fifths of the number of deputies and senators. The Congress at Versailles was supposed to meet again in April to adopt amendments to the basic law, but was cancelled.

The measure that Hollande wanted to introduce was proposed to be introduced in Russia by the leader of the “A Just Russia” faction in the State Duma, Sergei Mironov, shortly after the Paris terrorist attacks. “I think that we also need to follow the example of France, which deprives the citizenship of those citizens who participate in terrorist wars on the territory of other states. Last December, the Australian Parliament passed a law giving the government the right to revoke the citizenship of terrorism suspects without waiting for a court verdict or formal charges. The law applies to persons with dual citizenship.
