Ivan Dorn: "I do not want to be pop music"

The Ukrainian singer Ivan Dorn, known for the majority by the Flyinge Showman, successfully travels with a tour in Russia: on April 7, he gives a concert in Rostov, then in his schedule - Krasnodar, Arkhangelsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. In each city of Russia, promoters with yellow-claw balloons in their hands (the requirement of the artist on the rider) meet him, and the public brings Ukrainian flags to concerts. Ivan Dorn and his musical producer and DJ Lemonade Joe met with Denis Boyarinov in Moscow and talked about what they wanted to be underground.

- You are one of the few Ukrainian artists who now have a tour in Russia. Almost the only one. Did you easily decide on this tour?

Ivan Dorn: It is not easy. We postponed this tour for a long time. We released the album a year and a half ago.

- What were your doubts?

Dorn: I have a poem about this:

Since the release of the album - for more than a year. Where did we hang around?
I apologize, friends, really retained.
They were afraid. Then we did not allow us to come to you.
The misunderstanding of some could start our tour with a scandal,
Non -perception of others - even before it was perceived.
And now, when the supply has run out - a stock of patience and fear,
We raised our white flag and together we sent fear to <...>.
Whatever this world is - beautiful or alarming,
Contrary to everyone, we are standing here, because without you it is impossible for us.
(Applause at the table and the cries of "Yee-e".)

- Do you read this poem before performances in the cities of Russia?

Dorn: Yes, I am justified in all cities and immediately tell the essence. After this, “why” questions do not arise. It seems to me that the expectation even benefited - the public and I are even more greedy for each other. Hungry.

-When the magazine "Poster" chose you with his hero, he wrote that you are changing Russian pop music for the better. How do you feel about this installation?

Dorn: I will not be cunning - I like it. This is nice, but at the same time dangerous. This lamp is hung on me responsibility. I am afraid to consider my influence significant. I do not want to be embedded. I want to be a national musician - in the sense close to the people.

-Do you admit that everything is not very good with the Russian pop music?

Dorn: Yes, no. Good groups appear here- on-the-go , pompeya ...

-Well, this is not pop music-in the sense that in Russia it is not massive enough.

Dorn: This is my main problem. I do not want to be pop music-simply because I don't like this word. But the question: is Zemfira pop music?

- Of course.

Dorn: And the "ocean of Elsa" and "Boombox"?

- Yes.

Dorn: Well then, okay - a normal company is going (laughs) .

-Your second album “Randorn” compared to Co'N'Dorn is an attempt to be not pop music?

Dorn: Well, yes. More than yourself in your music.

- And a new concert program - an attempt to get away from the image of a person who sings “Foncamen”?

Dorn: No, I was never afraid that for someone I would be an artist of one song. If so - let it be so that it is here to prove. I wanted to show the listeners that we can be more serious, more complicated, more incomprehensible and not to go to the majority. We can be underground.

- How does it look at concerts? Here, many people come to listen to the “suncamen”, and you are something serious and complex to them-it affects the atmosphere.

Dorn: They hear “Foncamen” - just in the new version that suits us. She could suit both the concept of the second album and the third. We even decided to make a track for this arrangement for the English -speaking EP .

- You mentioned the concept of the third album - what is this concept?

Dorn: It will be a hip-hop album. We will devote it to the Phief Dawg (participant and founder of rap group A Tribe Called Quest , who passed away on March 22, 2016.-Ed.) And Farrell (Williams.- Ed. ) .

I want to be a folk musician.

“Farrell, as I understand it, your main character.”

Dorn: Now there is more Q-Tip , Farrell was the hero of my formation, my confidence, my taste. He took his place as a holy icon. And now I am gaining new saints.

- Who else is in Pantheon?

Dorn: Basta Raims - but not all, but selectively. And Antokha MC - I am his big fan.

- This is unexpected.

Dorn: I first felt the wild white envy. I was very sorry that I did not do it, that this is not my music, not my voice, not my pipe.

- Will there be a joint track with Antokha MC on the third album of Ivan Dorn?

Dorn: Yes, we plan. But by the fact that he has no ficherys, - that is what he is cool. The fact that he is separate, a little crazy. Fichering with me can break this isolation. I'm worried about him now.

We can be more serious, more complicated and incomprehensible.

-According to the logic of the rap album, it should be as many joint songs as possible with famous guests.

Dorn: I would do something with Sansei, with scriptonitis, with Lyon-maybe. I am interested to do something with the “center”, with an oximiron, with Fuse , with Assai, with Kravts, with ST , with each clip, with a crypt-a-clip ...

- Big list. I did not call Basta.

Dorn: It seems to me that he is not niche. Although, perhaps, I'm just afraid. After all, the scripts is very popular.

The third album will be called " Rapdorn " (laughs) .

- When to wait?

Dorn: I think in 2017. My favorite number is 17.

- Why?

Dorn: I was born on October 17.

Lemonade Joe: And this is a simple number - it is divided only by one and itself. These are very cool numbers. They are very individual.

How could I live here? Here everyone degrades and drink vodka.

“Do you want to compete with Farrell with your English album?”

Dorn: With Farrell? Well no ...

Lemonade Joe: We have an advantage! He is the amerikos, but we are not. We only need to achieve its level (laugh) .

Dorn: You can try!

Lemonade Joe: There is nothing unreal.

- I know that in Yekaterinburg you were in the Yeltsin Museum. Did you like the museum?

Dorn: You were there? Awesome, tell me! How cool it is! How conceptually filed! After the museum, I thought about the presidents of Ukraine. Which of them could be devoted to such a museum? I came to the boys and said that we do not have such a president. And Joe told me that Kravchuk. And I thought yes - probably Kravchuk.

-I liked that this is a museum not only about Yeltsin, but also about the time-about the 1990s. What were you in the 1990s?

Dorn: In the 1990s, I lived in the city of Slavutich. There were special 1990s. It was a new city, built for liquidators of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and for the victims in this accident. The city was invented as comfortable as possible, because people have already suffered. There was its own life, isolated, when compared with the rest of Ukraine.

- And, probably, people were special. With good education.

Dorn: Yes-many nuclear physicists. There were many visitors from Russia. We had a majority in the city of Russian -speaking schools. My school was the last Russian -speaking in the entire Kyiv region. I did not feel the gloomy 1990s. I know them only from books and films. We did not feel banditry, everyone just gathered to live in a new city, there was nothing to raider.

The second time I acted as a boy who sang the song of Shura "You do not believe the tears."

- How long have you been in Slavutic? How do they live there now?

Dorn: It was a few days ago. I do not like that Slavutich has turned into a cheap business city. Small business with its ugly plastic stores built up the first floors of houses, squares, etc. Moscow now got rid of it only. I understand that there is no getting away from this. But Slavutich has such a special architecture. It was built by 11 countries, and each quarter was named after the city of the country that built it. Yerevan, Tbilisi, Baku, Riga - and everyone has its own special architecture. I lived in Belgorod - with tiles in the cladding. Now all this beauty is built up with the same plastic nonsense. Plus, I don’t like that you come there and think: how could I live here - here everyone is degrading and drinking vodka? This is probably the case with everyone who leaves the small city, and then returns to it.

I also do not like that festivals disappeared from Slavutich. When the Chernobyl nuclear power plant worked, we held very cool festivals - for example, “Golden Autumn Slavutich”. It has been held since 1994. For the first time, La Toya Jackson, Patricia Kaas, all pop artists in Russia came to Ukraine for the first time. A huge scene was built - almost the largest in Eastern Europe. Such a show was!

- Can we say that this festival helped you become an artist?

Dorn: Of course. My first exit on a large scene took place there. My first appearance on stage were so strange. The first time is in the role of a boy who plays on a saxophone. The Belarusian singer came to us, performing a song about a hoarse saxophone. I passed the casting. Festival. Scene. Show. I run out and start playing on a saxophone where there is no phonogram of the saxophone, and when the saxophone plays, I just dance.

Lemonade Joe laughs.

Lemonade Joe: At the net?

Dorn: At the net. Mom made such a shirt long knitted, female ... made me such ... platforms, a black shirt, tight-fitting wool shorts ... I worked as a stylist. Well, in short, arthouse children.

Rhythm is our horse.

- Did you blow the hall?

Dorn: This was not the hall, but the square. I was in dark glasses. I saw nothing. They probably liked that I am a boy, so strange. I was 11 years old.

-In my opinion, pop music in the 1990s was much more fun and more and more fussy than now. The more interesting.

Dorn: Definitely. In the 1990s, they created a form in which they are now poured and on which everything is sold. As Spielberg in Hollywood created a stencil of popular cinema, according to which everyone is doing now. This is called "format".

- You are now sitting in the jury of the Ukrainian show "Voice". What are you teaching your wards?

Dorn: Rhythmics. Vakarchuk said that our cunning in rhythm, not in vocals. I agree with this. Rhythm is our horse. This is what we take. This is what I want to bet on my hip-hop album.
