Iceland will hold early parliamentary elections

Iceland will hold early parliamentary elections in the fall of 2016. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the leader of the opposition Pirate Party Birgitta Jonsdottir.

An agreement on early elections was reached between the parliamentary opposition and the ruling coalition. According to Reuters, the Pirate Party is leading in the latest opinion polls.

On the evening of April 6, the ruling coalition appointed Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Sigurður Ingi Johansson as Prime Minister of Iceland.

• The opposition demanded the dissolution of parliament and early elections due to a scandal surrounding an offshore company with millions of assets owned by Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson and not listed in his declaration. The company became known thanks to the publication of data from the Panama Archives;
• Gunnlaugsson resigned as prime minister on April 5 after thousands of people protested in Reykjavik.
• The next parliamentary elections in Iceland were scheduled to take place in April 2017.
