Davis first began working with Bowie in 1975 during the recording of the Young Americans album. After that, he began playing at Bowie's concerts and working with him in the studio. The drummer took part in the creation of all three albums of Bowie's Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes and Lodger). During the same period, Davis recorded the album The Idiot with Iggy Pop. In addition, the drummer collaborated with Stevie Wonder.

Davis began playing in the Clark Terry Big Band in 1967. Then he was called up to serve in Vietnam, where he was wounded. However, this did not stop him from playing in a military orchestra.

In recent years, the drummer has been working on his first solo album, The Groovemaster, which was not released during his lifetime.
