1906. The murder of George Gapon

110 years ago, on April 10, 1906, in the summer village of Ozerki near St. Petersburg, priest George Gapon, a former leader of the “Assembly of Russian Factory Workers in St. Petersburg” was killed. He was strangled by a member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party Peter Rutenberg.

At the beginning of 1906, Gapon admitted to Rutenberg in his connections with the police and tried to recruit him, claiming that, being double agents, they would be able to provide a great help to the working case.

Rutenberg announced the provocation to the heads of the combat organization of the Socialist -Revolutionary Party - Evgeny Azef, who himself was an agent of the police department, and his deputy Boris Savinkov. Azef demanded to execute Gapon.
