Crimean Prosecutor Natalya Poklonskaya on April 13 suspended the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people.
“Today I made a decision to suspend the activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People public association in order to prevent violations of federal law,” Poklonskaya told TASS.
Poklonskaya substantiates her decision with the norms of the law “On countering extremist activity”. The Crimean prosecutor's office sent the said document to the Russian Ministry of Justice in order to include the Mejlis in the general list of public and religious associations whose activities have been suspended in the country.
“The rights of a public association are suspended. They are prohibited from using all state and municipal media, they cannot hold various public mass events, use bank deposits, and generally carry out any work. All their propaganda will be banned,” the prosecutor of Crimea explained.
The decision to suspend the activities of the Mejlis will be valid until the decision of the Supreme Court of Crimea on the suit of Poklonskaya, in which she demanded that the Mejlis be recognized as an extremist organization. The claim is currently under consideration.
As lawyer Dzhemil Temishev, who represents the interests of the organization in court, told the publication, the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people is going to appeal Poklonskaya's decision to suspend the organization's activities.
“I believe that such a decision is premature. Our procedural opponent, realizing that the judicial prospects for issuing this decision (on recognizing the extremist activities of the Mejlis) are very illusory, still insists on suspending activities in this way. Of course, we will appeal this,” the lawyer said.
