The fire in the Winter Hotel occurred on May 1, 2016; the Valaam Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery stated that the cause was arson. According to preliminary investigation data, the fire in the building started with a loud bang early in the morning. A woman living next to the apartment on fire woke up from a loud sound. According to her, the door of the apartment was broken and streams of burning liquid flowed from it.

No one was injured as a result of the fire; the fire area was 800 square meters. The building's engineering communications were completely destroyed, and the roof collapsed over an area of ​​300 square meters.

The hotel was transferred to the Valaam Monastery in 2006. The building was undergoing renovation work, after which it was planned to open a spiritual and educational center.
