The Karelia police have opened a criminal case into the fire at the Winter Hotel on the island of Valaam and are going to petition for the arrest of the suspect in the arson. this with reference to the head of the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic Leonid Rozenburg. reports Interfax
A criminal case was opened under Part 1 of Article 167 of the Criminal Code (intentional destruction or damage to someone else’s property, if these acts caused significant damage).
The fire in the Winter Hotel occurred on May 1, 2016; the Valaam Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery stated that the cause was arson. According to preliminary investigation data, the fire in the building started with a loud bang early in the morning. A woman living next to the apartment on fire woke up from a loud sound. According to her, the door of the apartment was broken and streams of burning liquid flowed from it.
No one was injured as a result of the fire; the fire area was 800 square meters. The building's engineering communications were completely destroyed, and the roof collapsed over an area of 300 square meters.
The hotel was transferred to the Valaam Monastery in 2006. The building was undergoing renovation work, after which it was planned to open a spiritual and educational center.
