Awarded an international booker

On Monday, May 16, in London a ceremony of presenting the 2016 International Boker Prize was held. She was received by a writer from South Korea Khan Kang for the novel “The Vegetarian” (The Vegetarian).

Eun Hay and her husband are an ordinary South Korean family, they are well -mannered and modest people without special ambitions. But Yong Hay is not enough: she wants to make her life even more “plant”, at first she refuses meat, and in the end leaves her body, turning into a tree.

““ Vegetarian ”is a novel about today's South Korea, but also a novel about shame, desire and our indecisive attempts to understand others,” the prize said in a message.

Khan Kang will divide 50 thousand pounds of a cash prize with a translator of Roman, Englishwoman Deborah Smith.

The remaining five finalists of the international booker, among whom this year were Orhan Pamuk (Turkey) and Yan Lyanka (China), will receive a thousand pounds. Inthe Long List of 2016 there were 13 novels written by authors from Austria, Angola, Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Italy, China, Turkey, Finland, France, South Korea and Japan.

Starting from this season, the International Buker Prize is awarded according to the new rules: now it is presented annually, and not once every two years, as before, when awarding the prize, the previous merits of writers are not taken into account - they are awarded for a specific work translated into English and published in the UK. The monetary part of the prize is divided equally between the authors of the winning novel and its translator.
