Ukraine remains the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) reported today, having considered a public petition to revise the results of Eurovision 2016.

"The winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 was decided equally by music industry professionals and you, the TV viewers," the release said. "Ukraine's Jamala won thanks to the support of both the jury and the audience. She won with an exceptional, emotional performance of a deeply personal song." While acknowledging both Russia's Sergey Lazarev and Australia's Dami Im as worthy of victory, the EBU nonetheless reminds that "Eurovision is a competition. There can only be one winner."

EBU spokesman Paul Jordan said today that the organisation would consider a petition from Eurovision fans. However, he immediately said that he considered it "unlikely that the results will be revised". As of 18.20 Moscow time, the petition, posted two days ago, had been signed by more than 300,000 people.

The 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Stockholm on May 14, was won by Ukrainian performer Jamala with the song "1944". In second place was Australian singer Dami Im, and in third place was the audience favorite, Russian performer Sergey Lazarev. The petition, which was posted on change.org by user Arthur Hovhannisyan from Yerevan, boils down to the demand to recognize that Lazarev was the real winner of Eurovision.
